Heughs Canyon Trail

An intermediate out-and-back hike that follows a small canyon stream up to a waterfall. A fairly steep hike offering beautiful views and a quick way to be up and out of the city.

A moderately trafficked hike that will only take a couple hours but will put you deep into a small canyon on the Mt Olympus mountainside. Connects to a section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail that also crosses the Mt Olympus peak trail. Shady, cool trail that follows a stream for most of the way, and ends at a rock slide in view of a pretty waterfall.

Local's recommendation: Best times of year are spring through fall. Can be done in the winter with proper gear - Yaktrax or snowshoes, depending on the snow/ice.

Safety information: As with any trail in the foothills, watch for rattlesnakes, especially in summer months. Wear closed-toed shoes when hiking, be aware of your surroundings, and always look carefully before placing hands or feet. Be sure to bring plenty of water. This is a steep trail, so a walking pole can be helpful.

Roadbook

From the trailhead, follow the trail up the mountain. When you reach the turn off for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, stay on the Heughs Canyon Trail. When you come to the rock fall, you can get a good view of the waterfall and back down the canyon by scrambling to the middle of the rock area. It is also possible to scramble to the bottom of the rocks and walk up the stream to the base of the waterfall. There is a section of trail that continues at the top of the rock fall for those that have experience on that terrain.

How to Get There

Public transport: Bus routes do not travel up to this trailhead - best access is by car.

Directions: Drive south on Interstate 15 to exit 298 to merge onto Interstate 215 eastbound. Go 4.7 miles and take exit 6 for UT-190/6200 South eastbound. After less than a mile, turn left on Wasatch Boulevard. Heughs Canyon Trailhead parking is 0.5 mile past the turn on the right side of the street.

The Heughs Canyon Trailhead itself is not visibly marked and requires a short, steep walk through a neighborhood to a private lane. After parking, turn right on Canyon Cove Drive. Follow it a tenth of a mile to Oak Canyon Drive and turn left. Follow that for 400 feet and turn right on Canyon Winds Lane (formerly Berghalde Drive) and follow this one tenth of a mile to the end of the street. There is a private drive straight ahead, follow it to the trailhead.

Parking: The parking is free and on the street. The approximate location is just south of the intersection of Wasatch Boulevard and Canyon Cove Drive.
