June 25: Popular Mexican side from Guadalajara to visit Kettering’s Atwood Stadium

Flint, Mich. — The Flint City Bucks will play an international friendly match this summer against the reserve squad of Atlas FC of Mexico’s top league, Liga MX.

The match — Flint City’s second exhibition game against international competition — is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Kettering University’s historic Atwood Stadium.

“We’re so excited to present this international match to the city of Flint and to the incredibly vibrant soccer community across Genesee County and mid-Michigan,” said Bucks President Costa Papista. “Hosting Atlas means more than bringing elite competition;it’s an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity in our community with a family-friendly festival-like experience for fans of all backgrounds. We’re proud to add this match to our growing legacy of bringing people together through the world’s game. We look forward to welcoming Atlas and showcasing everything Flint and Genesee County has to offer.”

Beyond Atwood’s standard fan amenities, the gameday experience will include bilingual public address, live music, professional mariachi dancers (El Ballet Folklorico) and food vendors (Latinx Food – Flint Social Club) aligned with the theme of celebrating Latino and Hispanic heritage.

“We are proud to partner with the Flint City Bucks to showcase one of the many attractions that make Genesee County a great place to visit,” said Delrico J. Loyd, chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. “We are fortunate to have a professional soccer club in our community with a rich tradition of excellence on and off the field.”

Atlas, based in Guadalajara, was founded in 1916. The club won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022, becoming only the third team in Liga MX history to achieve that feat.

“We are so excited to welcome the players and their family and fans from Guadalajara, Mexico, to Flint & Genesee,” said Amari Steward, director of the community organization Explore Flint & Genesee. “With support from our Genesee County commissioners, this friendly international event is a great way to showcase our amazing community to our visitors and residents alike. Thank you to the Flint City Bucks for making this happen!”

In 2022, the Bucks hosted international competition in the reserves of Tigres UANL, also of Liga MX. Flint City lost a tight affair 2-0 after a 94th-minute insurance tally.
