In Frisco, Texas, sports aren’t just entertainment. They’re the foundation of a community fondly known as Sports City USA. And now, the story of how this city became a global sports hub is being told in a bold new way through Where Greatness Grows, a dynamic new docuseries from Visit Frisco.

Each short-form episode pulls viewers inside two decades of vision, collaboration, and growth. “This docuseries answers the question of why we’re called Sports City USA while sharing how we got there,” Visit Frisco shares.
The Frisco community has cultivated an environment where champions are made, not just discovered. “Winning teams don’t just appear; they grow, on game day, at early morning sessions, and weekend retreats. That same dedication applies to organizations who want to host a professional, world-class event here,” the team continues.
From the city’s early vision to the creation of this groundbreaking docuseries, here’s how Sports City USA came to life — and why it continues to be a destination built for world-class events.

The foundation of Sports City USA was laid more than 20 years ago, when Frisco leaders set out to turn ambitious ideas into reality. “When the city council wrote their biggest hopes and dreams for Frisco on a whiteboard in the office of City Manager George Purefoy, it sparked the big idea of becoming a sports city,” Visit Frisco explained.
That vision took root with the arrival of the Frisco RoughRiders minor league baseball team, followed by landmark partnerships with the Dallas Stars, FC Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys, and eventually the PGA of America. These deliberate steps shaped a destination built not just to host teams, but to build a sports ecosystem.
This origin story comes to life in Where Greatness Grows, with interviews from Purefoy and Mike McCall, the RoughRiders’ first General Manager, giving viewers an inside look at how bold ideas became reality.

Frisco’s success is anchored by a culture of partnership — a theme woven throughout the docuseries. “The collaboration between city leadership, the independent school district, and sports organizations is the key to success in Frisco,” said Visit Frisco.
The city’s early investments, like the Frisco Superdrome cycling velodrome that hosted national championships and Olympic trials, became blueprints for future projects. From there, partnerships grew, first with the Frisco RoughRiders and Dallas Stars, then FC Dallas with the country’s first soccer-specific stadium, and eventually the Dallas Cowboys and PGA of America.
“Voted ‘Best Place to Raise an Athlete,’ Frisco is a place where families go to get involved in the sports community, be a part of the growth in youth athletes, and witness the exhilaration of watching pro athletes in action,” Visit Frisco shared.

From youth leagues to global championships, Frisco offers unmatched breadth and flexibility. Event organizers can host everything from multi-team collegiate competitions in professional arenas to youth tournaments spanning dozens of outdoor fields, or even hold boardroom sessions inside the Dallas Cowboys’ headquarters.
The ripple effects of these events are felt citywide. The WOGA Classic and Valeri Liukin Invitational, which outgrew its 6,000-seat arena and moved to Ford Center at The Star, now welcomes thousands of gymnasts from 10 countries. On a larger scale, the NCAA Division I National Championship Game alone generated a $9.7 million economic impact for the city.

The heart of Frisco’s momentum is now captured in Where Greatness Grows. Each episode, under four minutes, distills two decades of progress into a fast-paced, engaging highlight reel. The series features voices from across the city’s sports ecosystem, from Charlotte Jones of the Dallas Cowboys to leaders at the PGA of America.
“Viewers will see how 20 years of partnerships, industry knowledge, and key players pulling in the same direction have built Frisco into a turn-key option for anyone looking to hold an event,” Visit Frisco explained.

“We hope viewers of Where Greatness Grows are left with a sense of how Frisco thrives off partnerships and works together to make big things happen,” Visit Frisco said. “Sports City USA isn’t just a roster of teams. It’s a robust ecosystem that nurtures success with world-class facilities, elite organizations, passionate families, and a community that consistently shows up, believes, and supports one another. When you host an event here, you tap into that ecosystem and are set up for success.”
