We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. The Museum, housed in the historic 2-room schoolhouse at 11740 New Kent Highway. Regular hours are Saturdays 10:00 - 2:00 and the first Monday of each month 10:00 - 2:00. Contact museum@newkenthistoricalsoc.com for appointments to visit during other times. There are exhibits of farm equipment, toys and household items from the 1930s and 40s, and the Green vs the Board of Education case. Admission is free.

New Kent Historical Society

Vandell Preserve at Cumberland Marsh is a mixture of freshwater tidal marsh and wooded upland. This preserve provides pristine habitat for wetlands species, migrating waterfowl, and has the world's largest population of the rare sensitive joint-vetch (Aeschynomene virginica), a member of the pea family listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.
