Chesapeake Forest Products Company opened this trail property in 1973 to help develop a public appreciation for the natural environment. The trails were opened to mountain bikes in 2007 to make this facility a multi-use trail for bikers, walkers, and joggers. Trails are currently marked by colored blazes on trees along the trails. We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. The battlefield sites commemorate the Battle of Eltham’s Landing in May 1862 as part of the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Current amenities at site #1 include parking, battlefield fencing, and a description of the activities that occurred in the Eltham area during the civil war. Amenities at site #2 will be forthcoming in the near future. Currently there is only a parking area at this site. Future amenities at this site will include fencing and a description of the site’s importance to the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Other future amenities at both sites will include a picnic area.

Eltham Battlefield

Gauthier Vineyard, LLC, is a family-owned working farm, equestrian center, vineyard and winery located in scenic New Kent County near the intersection of the Lafayette and Washington-Rochambeau trails to Yorktown. The owners, Mo and Sandi Gauthier, both retired Navy Captains, purchased their “Fair Winds” farm in 2010. Like most ground in the county, the farm is rich in history. The Gauthiers’ vines were planted by friends and family, followed by construction of the tasting room and wine making facility. In addition to their estate grapes, the Gauthier’s lease vines in the foothills overlooking the Shenandoah Valley in partnership with Randy and Karen Phillips, founder-owners of Cave Ridge Vineyard. Randy, an award winning vintner, oversees the wine making operations for Gauthier Vineyard. Gauthier Vineyard wines are 100% Virginia Grape, and the grapes are grown on the premises or on the leased vines. We have a pizza pavilion built around a wood-fired pizza oven we purchased from Kingsmill resorts. They had decided the oven was not adequately sized for their market. We have since added roasted oysters and chicken wings to our offerings. The menu varies, and our Facebook page is the best place to see what is on the menu any given week-end. In response to requests from our guests, we added a large fire pit down a stairway leading from the pizza pavilion.

Gauthier Vineyard

Ware Creek WMA is 2600 acres in New Kent County in the community of Barhamsville. Located on the York River and bounded by Philbates and Ware Creeks, this area offers extensive wetlands, as well mixed hardwood and pine forests and open fields.

Vandell Preserve at Cumberland Marsh is a mixture of freshwater tidal marsh and wooded upland. This preserve provides pristine habitat for wetlands species, migrating waterfowl, and has the world's largest population of the rare sensitive joint-vetch (Aeschynomene virginica), a member of the pea family listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.
