We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. Add to that awesome hotels, beautiful venues, attractions, art, craft beer, more than 900 restaurants and a convenient location, and you’ve got a top choice for your next sports event. New Kent’s newest farm brewery, Talleysville Brewing Company, brews a variety of beer styles made from the finest ingredients in the Commonwealth. Flights and pints are always available, along with rotating live music and food trucks.

The Cedar Lane Plantation home is characterized by an irregular architectural design that contributed to it being listed in the National Register of Historical Places. The original structure that was completed in 1826 is composed of two wooden stories of four rooms and two landings over a large brick basement. The basement, easily the most historical part of the house, features crude hand-hewn beams. The home is fully restored and furnished to reflect the Civil War era; its quarter mile long entry has been planted with twin rows of cedar trees. Nearby, a fragment of a private cemetery is enclosed by a white picket fence and a small orchard to the rear of the residence evokes the sizeable fruit orchard which is said to have existed in the nineteenth century. Cedar Lane is situated on a colonial roadway (now New Kent Highway) extending from the vicinity of Richmond to Williamsburg. The Plantation occupies a crossroads with Poindexter Road, which once extended from St. Peter’s Parish Church to Criss Cross Plantation four miles to the south. The house presents a charming prospect on top of an abrupt rise in elevation that affords it a pleasant 360-degree view of the surrounding agricultural fields and distant wood lines.

This Episcopal church in New Kent County was completed in 1703 and George and Martha Washington were married here in 1759. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and his family also worshiped here.

Vineyard Estate at New Kent Winery

The inception of Second Liberty Baptist Church dates back to 1866, two years before the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution legally abolished slavery. During this time, Blacks who lived in the St. Peters’ District of New Kent were required to worship at Emmaus Baptist Church. In 1865 some of the Black members listed on Emmaus’ church roll and others who had moved from Charles City County, started a house to house prayer band. The prayer band grew so large that it could not accommodate everyone. One of the members, Fielding Lewis, donated his property so that a brush arbor could be built and used for worship. Later, William Crump, a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and owner of Crumps’ Mill, donated the timber from which logs were hewn to build the church.
