The First African Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia is a prominent Black church. Founded in 1841, its members initially included both slaves and freedmen. It has since had a major influence on the local black community. At one point, it was one of the largest Protestant churches in the United States.

A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. The First African Baptist Church was founded in 1841, after white members of First Baptist Church sold the building to its 1,708 African American members, both free and enslaved for $6,500. The church became a center for Christian worship and an anchor for African American community development at a time when gatherings outside of church were prohibited.
