The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University displays the art of our time and is free and open to the public six days a week. Artworks and exhibitions showcasing artists from around the world rotate through our four galleries and common spaces regularly, with related programming and events open to the public. Our building, the Markel Center, was designed by Steven Holl Architects specifically for the presentation of contemporary art and was completed in 2018. The Markel Center is a LEED Gold-certified building, in keeping with VCU's commitment to sustainability and sustainable practices. Come see us! Admission is always free.

We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. Add to that awesome hotels, beautiful venues, attractions, art, craft beer, more than 900 restaurants and a convenient location, and you’ve got a top choice for your next sports event. Sally Bell's has been famous since 1924 for baked goods and box lunches with homemade sandwiches, cupcakes, and—especially!—potato salad. Takeout only; closed weekends. Sarah (“Sallie”) Cabell Jones and Elizabeth Lee Milton were friends who in 1924 opened Sarah Lee Kitchen (later renamed to avoid confusion with the “other” Sara Lee) a few doors away from its present location. Besides pies and cakes, the Kitchen is known for its Sally Lunn bread. For many Richmonders, however, no holiday meal is complete without Sally Bell’s potato salad, made from scratch daily. But when it’s gone, it’s gone, so order early!
