We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. The Battle of Malvern Hill, also known as the Battle of Poindexter's Farm, was fought on July 1, 1862, between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, led by Gen. Robert E. Lee, and the Union Army of the Potomac under Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan.

Black Dog Paddle-Henrico

Site of a militia position during Benedict Arnold's 1781 raid on the City of Richmond and also a British rest stop. It is currently part of the Virginia Capital Bike Trail with parking, restrooms, trail access, and historic markers about colonial and Civil War History.

Deep Bottom Park

Ride your boat, pier fish, or picnic on the James River. Deep Bottom Park features two boat ramps for access to the James River and a canoe launch on Four Mile Creek. Picnic facilities and fishing are also available at this site. The park grounds and boat ramp access are available from dawn to dusk.

The park includes a large pond with walking trail, meandering walkways through the woods, a playground, and open space as well as a gazebo, picnic shelters and a spray park. A variety of classes and events are offered for both children and adults throughout the year. Dorey Park also has an off-leash dog park, 1 acre in size, with 6 foot enclosed fence with two areas: one for small dogs and the other for larger dogs. Dorey is connected to the Virginia Capital Trail! Guests on the Virginia Capital Trail can now venture nearly ¾ of a mile into Dorey Park. The trail now extends from the back of the park down to the recreation center. Test your skills at our 18 hole disc golf course! Dorey Park features approximately five miles of trails designed for horseback riding. A horse ring is available for public use during the week. Dorey Park is included in the Urban Trout Program of VDWF. The lake receives annual stockings of channel catfish. Dorey Park is open daily dawn until dusk. Dorey Recreation Center serves as a restroom facility and welcome area for the Dorey Park trail connector and the Henrico County portion of the Virginia Capital Trail. The center has visitor information and exhibits highlighting the park and Henrico history.
