The auction houses in Shockoe Bottom frequently sold human "goods" along with corn, coffee and other commodities. Slave commerce was concentrated in the roughly 30-block area bounded by Broad, 15th and 19th Streets and the river. Davenport & Co., located at 15th and Cary Streets, was an auction house near the center of the district; portions of the building survived Civil War destruction and are now a part of the present building.

The 40-minute, historically narrated tours of the James River and Kanawha Canal operate throughout the season, seven days a week from May through October, and with varying hours in April and November. The boat tours travel along downtown Richmond's Canal Walk and review centuries of Richmond’s history, from Powhatan’s Chiefdom to the first commercially successful electric streetcar in the world, all while traveling in authentically styled boats. Tours depart on the hour from the canal’s Turning Basin at 139 Virginia Street, in Downtown Richmond. Boats can accommodate up to 25 passengers and are handicap accessible. Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis at the Turning Basin’s ticket kiosk and online 18 hours in advance by visiting RiverfrontCanalCruises.com. Canal Cruise private charters are also available as one- or two-hour private boat tours that are a favorite for reunions, birthdays, engagements, corporate retreats, churches, clubs, and so many more group outings. Riverfront Canal Cruises

Stretching 1.25 miles along the James River and the Kanawha and Haxall Canals, the Canal Walk presents centuries of Richmond’s history, from Powhatan's Chiefdom to the first commercially successful electric streetcar system in the world. The bike-friendly Canal Walk connects the Virginia Capital Trail and Low Line gardens on the east to Brown's Island and Belle Isle on the west. Take a 40 minute narrated historic tour on the Riverfront Canal Cruises from the first weekend in April to the 2nd weekend in November. Explore the area and discover the April 1865 exhibit, located on Brown's Island, hanging over the James River and connecting to the Potterfield bridge, a popular biking and walking bridge. History is interpreted through medallions, monuments and exhibits. The Richmond Slave Trail connects through the Canal Walk. The old hydroelectric plant is adorned with a gallery of street art murals. There are over 75 restaurants and 40 attractions and activities within walking distance.

Riverfront Canal Walk

Because Richmond’s canals were so narrow, “turning basins” were specially constructed so long barges and passenger boats could turn around. Richmond’s original Great Basin stood between 8th and 11th streets and Cary and Canal streets, and was connected by a series of locks to the Richmond dock. In 1998, a new turning basin for the restored canal was constructed between Virginia and 14th streets. Public art commemorates the original Great Basin as the center of commerce. You will find this installation in the James Center Atrium located next to the Omni Richmond Hotel at 12th and Cary streets. The Great Turning Basin historic marker can be reached from the intersection of South 10th and East Cary streets. More than 22 historic markers are within walking distance of the Turning Basin and Riverfront Canal Walk.

The Richmond Slavery Reconciliation Statue completes the triangle of Richmond; the city of Liverpool, England; and the Republic of Benin, each of which played a prominent role in the slave trade. Three identical statues symbolize a commitment to new relationships based on honesty and forgiveness.
