Chief Looking's Village

At 2023 Burnt Boat Drive, this archaeological park features a 0.55‑mile paved interpretive trail that winds through the remains of an ancient Mandan earth‑lodge village. As you walk, you’ll pass interpretive signage that reveals how this settlement once thrived with dozens of rectangular and circular lodges, surrounded by a defensive moat.

The overlook offers sweeping panoramic river views, making it not only a place of reflection but also one of breathtaking natural beauty. Among the park’s peaceful corners is Sonali’s Garden, a memory garden with benches where visitors can sit and absorb the landscape and legacy. The site once saw archaeological digs by the Paleocultural Research Group, uncovering details of Mandan life dating back to the mid-1500s, and offering rare insight into their architectural methods and community organization.
