Sports Salt Lake

Bell Canyon Granite Trail is a very popular Salt Lake City hike located right at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Thanks to the low starting elevation and the lack of major elevation gain it has become a popular hike for all ages and abilities. Not only are there great views of the Lone Peak Wilderness and the Wasatch Mountains, you'll enjoy fantastic overlooks of Salt Lake City. After only three-quarters of a mile you'll reach the "lake," which is really the lower of two reservoirs that are located in this watershed. A walk round the reservoir is the best way to enjoy Bell's without adding too much time.

The canyon is located on the east side of the valley, above Sandy, just off of Wasatch Blvd. Wildlife is commonly seen along this trail, including mountain goats in rocky areas. The trailhead is located at about 3450 East Little Cottonwood Road. It is clearly signed. The trail runs east up the mountain, initially following a dirt road.

**Roadbook**

Head up a relatively steep grade for about 0.3 miles (nothing too scary, but the difficulty may surprise if you're out of shape). After a few minutes of downhill, you'll head up to the Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir. There are trails around the reservoir, but stay to the left if you want to hit the waterfall.

Bell Canyon Granite Trail Hike

4.5 mi/7.2 km one-way — In Little Cottonwood Canyon, this trail leads first to an overlook with beautiful views down the canyon, then into a broad meadow and over a ridge to White Pine Lake. The trailhead is located on the south side of Little Cottonwood Road about 5.5 miles up the canyon, (about .7 miles below Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort). There is a parking area, but slow down when you get close, as it’s easy to miss.From the parking lot, walk along the wide service road (closed to vehicles) about 1.25 miles to the overlook. Another .75 miles gets you to the meadow—a good place for a break and a snack. You can turn around here for a round-trip of only 4 miles or continue on the trail for another 2.5 miles to get to the lake (a 9 mile round-trip excursion).

Easy out-and-back hike, with beautiful city and mountain views. This hike will take you to a suspension bridge spanning a pretty creek.

This trail is fairly well-trafficked, and is quite family friendly. The bridge, built in 2015, is 185 feet across Bear Canyon and connects two parts of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST). An optional trail, starting on either side of the bridge, will take a short loop around the canyon and place you on the other side of the bridge. There are many other trail options in this area, so feel free to explore.

**Insider tip**: Good in any season, but bring Yaktrax or some other method to keep your shoes on the ice and snow in cold weather.

**Details**  
Once you park in the Hidden Valley Park lot, the trailhead is on the east end of the lot. Follow the trail markers for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) to the right (south). Keep on the BST until you reach the bridge. The optional Bear Canyon Loop can be accessed on the east side of the trail on either side of the bridge, and is well marked.

**Directions**  
Drive south on Interstate 15 to Exit 292 at 11400 South. Turn left on 11400 South, and drive for 1.9 miles until you reach 1700 East. Turn right and drive south to Wasatch Boulevard. Turn left and drive east on Wasatch Boulevard for 1.7 miles until you see the sign for Hidden Valley Park on your right.

Alpha Coffee Big Cottonwood Canyon

From exit 295 on I-15 go east about 5 miles to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Continue east up the canyon 4.5 miles. Park in the Tanner’s Flat campground parking lot south of the road.Birds you can see—Black-chinned, Calliope, and Rufous Hummingbirds; Hammond’s and Dusky Flycatchers; Clark’s Nutcracker; Stellar’s Jay; Swainson’s Thrush; Tree, Violet-green, and Cliff Swallows; Pine Grosbeak; Red Crossbill; Cassin’s Finch; Black Rosy-finch.

Little Cottonwood Canyon

To reach Big Cottonwood Canyon from Salt Lake City, take I-215 to the 6200 South "Canyons" exit and then continue east on U-152, following signs to Solitude and Brighton. This 15-mile scenic byway takes about one hour round trip. From the main road, this canyon narrows almost immediately into dramatic alpine scenery. This 15-mile drive provides access to excellent hiking, fishing, picnicking, rock climbing, and camping. During the mid-1800s, Old West miners sought their fortune in gold and silver ore here. Remnants of old mines can be spotted from trails winding up the slopes. Located in the Uintah-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Big Cottonwood Canyon is home to Solitude and Brighton ski resorts. Both have full-service, year-round facilities. From Brighton there are several easy trails leading to various lakes, including Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake Martha, and Dog Lake. The canyon is a protected watershed area and no dogs are permitted. Wilderness areas are located to the north and south.
