As part of Nassau County’s America250 celebration, we&#8217;re diving deep into the local maritime history that helped defend global democracy. From local shipyards to camouflaged lookout stations, here is how Nassau County and the Long Island Sound served as a shield for the home front. 
Gateway to the Atlantic: The Naval Routes &amp; Shipbuilding
The Long Island Sound wasn’t just a buffer zone during the war – it was a highway for freedom. It provided a protected inland route for warships, submarines, and cargo vessels traveling between the massive naval yards of New York City and New England.
Because the Sound offered deep water shelter from the open ocean where German U-boats actively prowled the Atlantic coast, it became an ideal training ground and transit corridor. It also represented significant industrial might. Small boatyards along Nassau&#8217;s North Shore bays were re-tooled overnight. Places like Oyster Bay and Port Washington produced essential small craft, including rescue boats, barges, and components for amphibious landing vehicles. In 1947, a massive wave of World War II veterans returned home to a severe national housing shortage. Young families were cramped into tiny city apartments or living with relatives, dreaming of a space to call their own.
Enter builders William and Alfred Levitt. On a vast expanse of former potato fields in the heart of Nassau County, they envisioned something entirely unprecedented: affordable, mass-produced, single-family homes built with assembly-line efficiency.

How the American Dream Found its Roots in Nassau County: The History of Levittown, the Country’s First Modern Suburb

Nassau County has, for centuries, been a battlefield as the country grew and evolved and in the early 1900s, Nassau County became an unexpected and dynamic battleground for the women’s suffrage movement. Nassau County was home to two worlds: traditional establishment elites determined to preserve the status quo, and a powerful network of local women who realized that to change the nation, they had to start right here in their own backyards.
The Strategist of Sands Point
Central to Nassau County and the regional movement was Alva Vanderbilt Belmont. Alva refused to live quietly. Based at her breathtaking Beacon Towers estate in Sands Point, the sprawling Gold Coast property that famously inspired the setting for The Great Gatsby – Alva chose to pour her immense fortune directly into the front lines of the women&#8217;s rights movement.
Alva founded the <a href="https://www.nelliemcclungfoundation.com/political-equality-league">Political Equality League</a> and effectively turned her North Shore properties into operational war rooms. She also hosted massive rallies on her lawns, coordinated with international activists, and funded the highly visible, strategic picketing campaigns that forced the issue onto the national stage. Her presence gave the local movement an undeniable gravitational pull.
The &#8220;General&#8221; in the Field
While Alva provided the operational funding, Rosalie Gardiner Jones was the public face of the local movement. Born into an old-money, fiercely anti-suffrage family in Oyster Bay, Rosalie – dubbed &#8220;General Jones&#8221; by the media for her public campaigns with strict, military-style discipline orchestrated a legendary Suffrage Hike. During her headline-grabbing protest, Rosalie led a group of activists on a march from New York City all the way to Washington, D.C., timed for the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson.
Their route took them straight down Nassau County’s dirt roads, through hubs like Hempstead and Mineola. They marched through winter mud, endured intense press scrutiny, and faced down crowds of vocal skeptics. Because no matter what, Rosalie recognized one thing: to change deep-seated political opinions, you have to capture the public&#8217;s imagination.
A Hard-Fought Local Victory
When the battle began, Nassau County’s Suffragettes had a long journey ahead of them. The area was a deeply traditional stronghold, dominated by an establishment that viewed the concept of women voting as a fundamental threat to the social fabric.
The resistance was real and measurable. When New York State put women’s suffrage to a vote in a massive statewide referendum in 1915, Nassau was one of only two counties in the entire state to reject it. 
But the local organizers refused to back down. Led by strategists like Harriot Stanton Blatch, the daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton who also lived and worked locally, the women shifted their approach. They stopped focusing exclusively on high-society circles and began organizing the working-class women of Long Island, including women running small businesses, working local farms, and managing busy households.
Their persistence completely turned the tide. By November 1917, New York went back to the ballot box, and this time, the state officially granted women the right to vote, three full years before the rest of the country ratified the 19th Amendment.

When you drive past the Sands Point Preserve today, or walk the historic downtowns of Roslyn, Hempstead, and Oyster Bay, you’re walking through a landscape where history was actively rewritten. These weren&#8217;t distant or isolated events either, these were neighborhood efforts led by local citizens who risked their social standing and personal safety for a bigger vision of American democracy.
As we celebrate 250 years of the American story, Nassau County’s chapter reminds us that true progress isn&#8217;t just handed down from the very top. Instead, it’s built step by step, town by town, right here at home.

Traditionally held over Memorial Day Weekend, the beloved air show has been moved to Independence Day Weekend in 2026 as part of America250 festivities. 
Headlining the show will be the United States Navy Blue Angels, whose precision flying demonstrations have thrilled audiences for generations. Additional military and civilian performers will take to the skies throughout the weekend, making this one of the most exciting events of the summer.
The combination of the July 4 fireworks and the July 5–6 air show creates an extended patriotic celebration unlike any other in Nassau County.
TD Bank Celebrate America Returns to Eisenhower Park
Kick off the holiday weekend early at the TD Bank Celebrate America Fireworks &amp; Show on Thursday, July 2, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
One of Nassau County&#8217;s most popular Independence Day traditions, this free community event takes place at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre (Parking Field 6) and features an evening of live entertainment, patriotic fun, and a spectacular fireworks finale.

Discover Four Must-See Exhibitions at the Nassau County Museum of Art This Spring

One of the easiest ways to understand Nassau County’s history is simply to walk through it. You see it in centuries-old roads, waterfront villages still following colonial-era street patterns, and in preserved homes, mills, churches, taverns, and farmhouses that survived wars, industrialization, suburban growth, and generations of change.
During the Revolutionary War, Nassau County was occupied territory. Local residents found themselves divided between Patriot and Loyalist loyalties. Spy networks moved information through coastal communities. <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/george-washington-slept-here-nassau-county-locations-connected-to-americas-first-president/">George Washington traveled through local villages after the war</a>. And towns like Oyster Bay, Roslyn, Hempstead, and Port Washington became part of the larger story of the nation’s founding.
What makes Nassau County especially interesting today is that so much of that history still exists within the modern landscape.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, these sites offer a chance to experience the county’s early history in a way that feels tangible rather than distant.
Roslyn: Valley Road Historic District 
If there’s a place in Nassau County that immediately feels connected to the past, it’s Roslyn’s Valley Road Historic District. The road curves downhill toward Hempstead Harbor, lined with old homes, stone retaining walls, narrow pathways, and buildings that predate the United States itself. Unlike historic districts that feel overly restored or staged, Valley Road still feels lived in. It’s easy to imagine merchants, mill workers, and travelers moving through the area two centuries ago.
Roslyn developed early because of the harbor and its mills, which made the village an important commercial center during the colonial period. Farmers brought grain to local grist mills. Ships carried goods through Hempstead Harbor. Taverns and shops grew around the activity.
Several structures in and around the district connect directly to that history, including the <a href="https://www.roslynlandmarks.org/profiles/roslyn-grist-mill">Roslyn Grist Mill</a> and nearby <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/america-250/historic-bites-nassau-county-restaurants-with-stories-to-tell/">Hendrick’s Tavern</a>, where George Washington stopped for breakfast during his 1790 tour of Long Island.
Oyster Bay: Raynham Hall
Oyster Bay’s history tends to unfold in layers. There&#8217;s maritime history, Roosevelt history, and even the village itself. But one of the most important stories tied to Oyster Bay dates back to the Revolutionary War and the secret intelligence operation known as the <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/culper-spy-ring-long-island/">Culper Spy Ring</a>.
At the center of that story is <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/raynham-hall/">Raynham Hall</a>.
Built in the early 1700s, the home belonged to the Townsend family, including Robert Townsend, who operated under the alias “Culper Jr.” while secretly gathering intelligence for George Washington.
During the war, British forces occupied New York City and much of Long Island, making espionage critical to the Patriot cause. Townsend quietly passed information about troop movements and military strategy through a network of couriers and agents operating across Long Island and Connecticut.
The intelligence gathered by the Culper Spy Ring helped Washington monitor British plans and avoid potentially devastating attacks.
Today, Raynham Hall remains one of the clearest physical connections to that hidden history. The museum doesn’t just tell the story of espionage – it also captures the tension and uncertainty of life on occupied Long Island, where loyalty was often complicated and dangerous. 
Port Washington: Sands-Willets House 
Built in the early eighteenth century, the Sands-Willets House home belonged to the Sands family, who supported the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. The house stood through the years of British occupation, when Long Island families faced constant uncertainty about property, supplies, and political allegiance.
Unlike grand estates built later during the Gold Coast era, the Sands-Willets House reflects the practical realities of colonial life. 
Today, the house is operated by the <a href="https://www.cowneck.org/">Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society</a> and offers visitors a look at how early Long Island families actually lived. Exhibits focus not only on Revolutionary history, but also on maritime trade, farming, and the everyday routines that shaped colonial communities.
Manhasset: Elderfields Preserve 
Tucked into Manhasset, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/elderfields-preserve/">Elderfields Preserve</a> is a preserved farmhouse offering a glimpse into the rural character that once defined much of Long Island before suburban development transformed the region in the twentieth century. The farmhouse dates back to the late 18th century, a period when most of Nassau County consisted of farms, mills, and open land connected by rough roads and coastal trade routes.
Today, Elderfields functions as both a historic site and cultural space, hosting exhibits and community events while preserving one of the few remaining pieces of Long Island’s earlier agricultural landscape.
East Rockaway: Hewlett House 
One of the more complicated aspects of Revolutionary War history is that not everyone supported independence. The Hewlett House in East Rockaway helps tell that side of the story.
Built around 1740, the home belonged to the Hewlett family, who were Loyalists during the American Revolution. On Long Island, those divisions often ran deep. Neighbors supported different sides. Families found themselves politically divided. Communities struggled to navigate British occupation while trying to protect homes and livelihoods.
The Hewlett House reflects that tension in a very direct way. Rather than presenting the Revolution as a simple narrative of Patriots versus British forces, the site reveals how complicated everyday life could become during wartime, especially in occupied regions like Long Island.
Roslyn: The Roslyn Grist Mill
The Roslyn Grist Mill has become one of Nassau County’s most recognizable historic landmarks, partly because it still looks so connected to the landscape around it. Positioned along the water near Hempstead Harbor, the mill reflects the role industry and trade played in the growth of early Long Island communities.
Originally built in the 18th century, the mill processed grain for local farmers and merchants, helping support the surrounding economy during both the colonial and post-colonial periods. Like many early Long Island structures, the mill’s location was strategic. Access to the harbor allowed goods to move efficiently between Long Island and New York City, reinforcing Roslyn’s importance as a commercial center.
After extensive restoration work, the mill now serves as an educational and historic site that helps visitors understand how these early industries shaped the development of Nassau County communities.

Here, some of the most historical sites in Nassau County are, now, popular restaurants – modern menus served inside colonial farmhouses and stagecoach stops, Gold Coast-era markets and former presidential offices. These places have hosted travelers, presidents, merchants, and generations of local families.
As the nation approaches America250, Nassau County offers visitors the chance to experience history in a uniquely flavorful way. These restaurants don’t just serve memorable meals – they serve stories. Here are a few Nassau County dining destinations where the past is always part of the experience.

The Milleridge Inn | Jericho 
Few restaurants on Long Island carry a story quite as old or as colorful as <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/milleridge-inn/">The Milleridge Inn</a>.
The property dates back to 1672, when Quaker settler Mary Willets built a two-room home with a central fireplace in what was then colonial Jericho. Over time, the site evolved into a stagecoach stop, welcoming travelers moving between early Long Island communities.

More than three centuries later, the building still stands. The Milleridge Inn is widely considered one of the oldest continuously operating restaurant properties in the United States. The historic grounds resemble a colonial village, and for decades visitors have been greeted by one of the Inn’s most beloved traditions – a flock of roaming peacocks that wander the property.
Like many historic buildings, the Inn carries its share of folklore. After a 19th-century fire destroyed the second floor, local legend holds that the property may even be haunted. In 2024, the Milleridge Inn underwent a major renovation, blending modern updates with the historic charm that has made it a Long Island landmark for generations.

Hendrick’s Tavern | Roslyn 
In the heart of historic Roslyn, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/hendricks-tavern/">Hendrick’s Tavern</a> stands on the site of a home once owned by Hendrick Onderdonk, one of the village’s most prominent early residents. The property traces its origins to the 18th century and is remembered as the place where President George Washington stopped for breakfast during his 1790 tour of Long Island.
On April 24, 1790, Washington arrived in Roslyn from Oyster Bay and began his day at the Onderdonk home. At the time, Onderdonk owned both the<a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/hidden-history-nassau-county/"> Roslyn Grist Mill </a>and the Onderdonk Paper Mill, which played a role in passing messages during the Revolutionary War.
The house – then known as the Pine-Onderdonk-Bogart House – had already experienced the turbulence of the Revolution, including a British raid in 1781 during the occupation of Long Island.
In the early 1900s, the property was converted into a restaurant and has remained a dining destination ever since. Following a major renovation in 2012, it reopened as Hendrick’s Tavern, offering a modern dining experience within one of Nassau County’s most historic settings.

Gatsby’s Landing | Roslyn 
Overlooking Hempstead Harbor, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/gatsbys-landing/">Gatsby’s Landing</a> sits in one of Nassau County’s most picturesque waterfront settings – but the story of the building itself stretches back to Roslyn’s earlier commercial days.
The structure was originally Bert Sussel Market, a meat market and grocery store built by the Sussel family. The one-story commercial building was constructed using cinderblock and distinctive black opaque glass tiles, reflecting the mid-20th-century architectural style common in small-town American commercial districts.
Today, Gatsby’s Landing has transformed the space into a vibrant waterfront restaurant, drawing visitors for seafood, cocktails, and harbor views. Its name pays homage to Long Island’s Gold Coast era, when nearby estates inspired the glamour depicted in The Great Gatsby.

Rothmann’s Steakhouse | East Norwich 
Few restaurants on Long Island can claim a guest list as storied as <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/rothmanns-steakhouse/">Rothmann’s Steakhouse</a>. Established in 1907 by Charles and Franziska Rothmann, the restaurant quickly became a cornerstone of the North Shore dining scene. The original building itself dates back to 1851, adding another layer to the property’s deep history.

The restaurant sits within the Oyster Bay Marine Center, an area deeply tied to Long Island’s maritime heritage. Since the 1600s, Oyster Bay has been home to fishing fleets, shipbuilders, and shellfishing operations that helped sustain the region’s coastal economy.

Tucked into the historic heart of Oyster Bay, Wild Honey occupies a building with an extraordinary presidential connection. The restaurant is located in the historic Moore’s Building, which served as the local office for President Theodore Roosevelt during his presidency when he operated from nearby Sagamore Hill – often referred to as the nation’s “Summer White House.”

During the Revolutionary War, Long Island became a strategic focal point. After the Battle of Long Island in 1776, British forces occupied the island for much of the war. Even under occupation, however, the region remained central to Washington’s strategy, thanks in large part to the intelligence gathered by the <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/arts-culture/culper-spy-ring-long-island/">Culper Spy Ring</a>, a secret network of informants reporting directly to Washington.

Today, visitors exploring Nassau County can still encounter the places and stories connected to this pivotal era in American history. From colonial homes and historic museums to restored taverns and charming villages, these destinations offer a chance to step into the world of the American Revolution.

Raynham Hall Museum | Oyster Bay 
If there’s one Nassau County site most closely tied to George Washington’s Revolutionary War intelligence network, it’s <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/hidden-history-nassau-county/">Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay.</a>
Built in the early 1700s, the home belonged to the Townsend family, whose members were deeply involved in the Culper Spy Ring, the covert intelligence operation organized by Washington in 1778 to monitor British activity in New York.

Robert Townsend, known by the code name “Culper Jr.”, secretly reported on British troop movements, supply chains, and military plans. His intelligence proved invaluable to Washington and helped the Continental Army anticipate British strategies.
Washington is believed to have visited the home after the war, making Raynham Hall one of the most compelling Revolutionary-era landmarks in the region. Today, the Raynham Hall Museum offers guided tours, exhibits, and programming that bring the story of espionage and colonial life vividly to life.
 
 
Daniel Young’s Homestead | Oyster Bay 
During his 1790 presidential tour of Long Island, George Washington spent time in Oyster Bay and is believed to have stayed at the homestead of Daniel Young, a prominent local resident.
Washington’s five-day tour took place in April 1790 while New York City served as the nation’s capital. Traveling east across Long Island, the president visited communities including Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Huntington, Smithtown, and Amityville. The trip allowed Washington to observe the region’s farms and local economy while reconnecting with communities that had played a role in the Revolutionary War.
Young’s home in Oyster Bay served as one of Washington’s stops during the journey. The visit reflects the strong ties between Long Island residents and the early leadership of the new United States, particularly in areas like Oyster Bay where patriot networks and Revolutionary-era activity were deeply rooted.

Sands-Willets House | Port Washington 
Dating back to the early 1700s, the Sands-Willets House in Port Washington is one of Nassau County’s oldest surviving homes. The property belonged to the Sands family, prominent residents who supported the American cause during the Revolution. Their home stood during a time when Long Island communities were caught between British occupation and the growing Patriot movement.

Today, the house is operated by the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society and serves as a museum dedicated to preserving the history of the region. Rock Hall Museum | Lawrence 
Another glimpse into colonial Long Island can be found at Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence, one of the finest surviving Georgian manor houses in New York State. Built around 1767, Rock Hall reflects the prosperity of Long Island merchants and landowners during the colonial period. During the Revolutionary War, the surrounding region experienced the presence and movement of both British and American forces.
Today, the museum offers tours and educational programs that allow visitors to explore 18th-century architecture, furnishings, and daily life, providing a deeper understanding of the world in which George Washington and the Founding Fathers lived.

Hendrick’s Tavern | Roslyn 
Hendrick’s Tavern in Roslyn sits on the site where President George Washington stopped for breakfast during his 1790 tour. On April 24, 1790, Washington arrived in Roslyn from Oyster Bay and began his day with breakfast at the home of Hendrick Onderdonk, whose property stood where the restaurant is located today. At the time, Onderdonk was one of the area’s most prominent residents, owning the <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/hidden-history-nassau-county/">Roslyn Grist Mill</a> and the Onderdonk Paper Mill, which was part of a network used to pass messages during the Revolutionary War. 
 
The house, originally known as the Pine-Onderdonk-Bogart House, had already experienced the turbulence of the Revolution – it was raided by British forces in 1781 during the occupation of Long Island. In the early 1900s, the property was converted into a restaurant and has continued serving guests ever since. After a major renovation in 2012, it reopened as <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/hendricks-tavern/">Hendrick’s Tavern</a>, blending historic character with modern dining in the heart of Roslyn’s historic district.
 
Hewlett House | East Rockaway 
The Hewlett House, built around 1740, offers another window into the complexities of life during the Revolutionary War. The Hewlett family were Loyalists who supported the British Crown, highlighting the deep divisions that existed within many Long Island communities during the conflict. Families, neighbors, and entire towns often found themselves on opposing sides of the war. Today, the house stands as an important historic site, helping tell the broader story of how the Revolutionary War affected everyday life across Long Island.

Nassau County parks hold layers of cultural history, from literary inspiration to presidential connections and some of the most ambitious public works projects of the 20th century. Places like Christopher Morley Park, Eisenhower Park, and Jones Beach State Park show how landscapes evolve while still carrying the stories of the people who helped shape them.

Christopher Morley Park: A Literary Legacy in Motion 
Located in North Hills, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/parks-beaches/the-perfect-day-at-christopher-morley-park/">Christopher Morley Park</a> honors one of Long Island’s most beloved writers. Christopher Morley, author of Parnassus on Wheels and longtime columnist for the New York Evening Post, lived nearby in the early 20th century. Known for his wit and love of everyday adventure, Morley was deeply connected to the landscapes around him. The park was named for him and strives to preserve that spirit.
A small hill within the park, once known as “Mount Misery,” was one of Morley’s favorite spots. From its summit he could look out across Long Island and reflect on the changing world around him. The park reflects Morley’s belief that ordinary moments like reading a book, walking through the woods, sharing conversation are part of life’s richest experiences.

The site was once part of the Mitchel Field air base, a major aviation training and operations center during the early 20th century. During World War I and World War II, the field played a significant role in military aviation and national defense.
After the airfield was decommissioned, Nassau County transformed the land into a public park, where wide runways and open training grounds evolved into green spaces for recreation.
Today, Eisenhower Park hosts concerts, sporting events, and cultural celebrations. Beneath the soccer fields and walking paths lies a landscape shaped by aviation history and the broader story of America’s growth during the 20th century.

Jones Beach State Park: A Vision for Public Access
