The Milleridge Inn | Jericho 
Few restaurants on Long Island carry a story quite as old or as colorful as <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/milleridge-inn/">The Milleridge Inn</a>.
The property dates back to 1672, when Quaker settler Mary Willets built a two-room home with a central fireplace in what was then colonial Jericho. Over time, the site evolved into a stagecoach stop, welcoming travelers moving between early Long Island communities.

More than three centuries later, the building still stands. The Milleridge Inn is widely considered one of the oldest continuously operating restaurant properties in the United States. The historic grounds resemble a colonial village, and for decades visitors have been greeted by one of the Inn’s most beloved traditions – a flock of roaming peacocks that wander the property.
Like many historic buildings, the Inn carries its share of folklore. After a 19th-century fire destroyed the second floor, local legend holds that the property may even be haunted. In 2024, the Milleridge Inn underwent a major renovation, blending modern updates with the historic charm that has made it a Long Island landmark for generations.

Hendrick’s Tavern | Roslyn 
In the heart of historic Roslyn, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/hendricks-tavern/">Hendrick’s Tavern</a> stands on the site of a home once owned by Hendrick Onderdonk, one of the village’s most prominent early residents. The property traces its origins to the 18th century and is remembered as the place where President George Washington stopped for breakfast during his 1790 tour of Long Island.
On April 24, 1790, Washington arrived in Roslyn from Oyster Bay and began his day at the Onderdonk home. At the time, Onderdonk owned both the<a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/hidden-history-nassau-county/"> Roslyn Grist Mill </a>and the Onderdonk Paper Mill, which played a role in passing messages during the Revolutionary War.
The house – then known as the Pine-Onderdonk-Bogart House – had already experienced the turbulence of the Revolution, including a British raid in 1781 during the occupation of Long Island.
In the early 1900s, the property was converted into a restaurant and has remained a dining destination ever since. Following a major renovation in 2012, it reopened as Hendrick’s Tavern, offering a modern dining experience within one of Nassau County’s most historic settings.

Gatsby’s Landing | Roslyn 
Overlooking Hempstead Harbor, <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/gatsbys-landing/">Gatsby’s Landing</a> sits in one of Nassau County’s most picturesque waterfront settings – but the story of the building itself stretches back to Roslyn’s earlier commercial days.
The structure was originally Bert Sussel Market, a meat market and grocery store built by the Sussel family. The one-story commercial building was constructed using cinderblock and distinctive black opaque glass tiles, reflecting the mid-20th-century architectural style common in small-town American commercial districts.
Today, Gatsby’s Landing has transformed the space into a vibrant waterfront restaurant, drawing visitors for seafood, cocktails, and harbor views. Its name pays homage to Long Island’s Gold Coast era, when nearby estates inspired the glamour depicted in The Great Gatsby.

Rothmann’s Steakhouse | East Norwich

If there’s one Nassau County site most closely tied to George Washington’s Revolutionary War intelligence network, it’s <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/get-inspired/history/hidden-history-nassau-county/">Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay.</a>
Built in the early 1700s, the home belonged to the Townsend family, whose members were deeply involved in the Culper Spy Ring, the covert intelligence operation organized by Washington in 1778 to monitor British activity in New York.

Robert Townsend, known by the code name “Culper Jr.”, secretly reported on British troop movements, supply chains, and military plans. His intelligence proved invaluable to Washington and helped the Continental Army anticipate British strategies.
Washington is believed to have visited the home after the war, making Raynham Hall one of the most compelling Revolutionary-era landmarks in the region. Daniel Young’s Homestead | Oyster Bay 
During his 1790 presidential tour of Long Island, George Washington spent time in Oyster Bay and is believed to have stayed at the homestead of Daniel Young, a prominent local resident.
Washington’s five-day tour took place in April 1790 while New York City served as the nation’s capital. Traveling east across Long Island, the president visited communities including Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Huntington, Smithtown, and Amityville. The trip allowed Washington to observe the region’s farms and local economy while reconnecting with communities that had played a role in the Revolutionary War.
Young’s home in Oyster Bay served as one of Washington’s stops during the journey. The visit reflects the strong ties between Long Island residents and the early leadership of the new United States, particularly in areas like Oyster Bay where patriot networks and Revolutionary-era activity were deeply rooted.

Sands-Willets House | Port Washington 
Dating back to the early 1700s, the Sands-Willets House in Port Washington is one of Nassau County’s oldest surviving homes. Operating under the alias “Samuel Culper Jr.,” Townsend used his work as a merchant and journalist to collect intelligence from British-held New York City. For more than four decades – from the roaring 1920s through the Space Race – Nassau County sat at the center of aviation history. Runways stretched across open farmland. Engineers and test pilots pushed the limits of technology. And the aircraft designed here would eventually help carry astronauts to the moon.

Today, that legacy lives on at places like the <a href="https://nassaucountytourism.com/cradle-of-aviation-museum/">Cradle of Aviation Museum</a>, but the story begins much earlier.  Here’s the remarkable arc of how Nassau County helped America take flight.

1927: Lindbergh and the Flight That Changed the World 
On the morning of May 20, 1927, a crowd gathered at Roosevelt Field, an airfield carved out of Long Island farmland. Their focus was a modern aircraft called the Spirit of St. Louis and Charles Lindbergh, the young pilot preparing to fly it.

When Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field that morning, he began what would become one of the most famous journeys in aviation history: the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, from New York to Paris. Thirty-three hours later, Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget Airport and instantly became a global celebrity. The flight changed aviation forever, and Roosevelt Field became known worldwide as the place where it all began.

Amelia Earhart and the Rise of the Aviators 
Lindbergh wasn’t the only aviation pioneer launching from Long Island. In the years that followed, Amelia Earhart also flew out of Roosevelt Field. By the late 1920s and early 1930s, Long Island had become one of the country’s most important centers for experimental flight.

Among the most important players was Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, headquartered in Bethpage. Grumman produced aircraft like the F6F Hellcat and the TBF Avenger, both of which played crucial roles in the Allied victory during the war. 1969: The Eagle Lands

Nassau County: Where America Took Flight

Some of the most critical victories came through secrets, coded messages, and a network of ordinary citizens risking everything to pass along information. And much of that intelligence network ran directly through Long Island.
Today, visitors exploring the Washington Spy Trail can follow the story of one of the most important espionage operations in American history: the Culper Spy Ring, a secret intelligence network created by George Washington to monitor British forces occupying New York City.
Washington’s Intelligence Problem 
By 1778, the Revolutionary War had reached a dangerous turning point.
The British controlled New York City, which had become their primary military headquarters in North America. From there, British commanders could move troops, ships, and supplies throughout the colonies.
For Washington and the Continental Army, this created a huge intelligence gap. Without reliable information about British movements and plans, American forces were constantly reacting rather than anticipating.
Washington understood something many military leaders of the time did not: information could change the outcome of the war. So he authorized the creation of a covert intelligence network operating directly behind enemy lines.
The Birth of the Culper Spy Ring 
The spy network was organized by Major Benjamin Tallmadge, a young Continental Army officer from Setauket on Long Island’s North Shore. Tallmadge recruited trusted civilians who knew the region well and could move through British-controlled territory without drawing suspicion. The group would become known as the Culper Spy Ring, named after the aliases used by two of its key members. Among them were:

Long Island’s Strategic Importance 
Long Island was a dangerous place during the Revolutionary War. After the Battle of Long Island in 1776, the British took control of the island and maintained a strong presence there for much of the war. Loyalists, Patriots, British soldiers, and spies all moved through the same towns and roads. This made the region both risky and valuable for intelligence work.
Spies could blend into everyday life – farmers traveling to markets, merchants conducting business, sailors moving between ports. But discovery meant severe consequences, including imprisonment or execution.
The Culper network carefully used Long Island’s communities and transportation routes to their advantage. Intelligence gathered in New York City would travel east through Long Island before crossing the Sound to Connecticut, where it eventually reached Washington’s headquarters.
Oyster Bay’s Quiet Role 
Along the North Shore, Oyster Bay became one of the locations where everyday colonial life intersected with the hidden world of espionage. The harbor made it a natural stopping point for travel and communication, while the town’s mix of Loyalist and Patriot families created an environment where information flowed – sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.
One of the most significant historic homes connected to these stories is Raynham Hall. Built in the early 1700s, the house belonged to the Townsend family, whose members lived through the complicated loyalties and tensions of wartime Long Island. Robert Townsend, one of the most important members of the Culper Spy Ring, spent time in the home and maintained close ties to the family.
Stories surrounding Raynham Hall highlight how espionage often unfolded quietly within ordinary households. Family dinners, business conversations, and visiting soldiers could all provide valuable intelligence, if someone was paying attention.
While much of the Culper network operated in secrecy, their efforts helped Washington gain critical insight into British military plans, troop movements, and supply strategies. Ticket Information
LuminoCity offers three ticket options, so everyone can enjoy the experience their way. All tickets include access to the festival, dazzling light installations, and free on-site parking.
General Admission tickets are priced at $29 during non-peak hours and $32 during peak hours. They provide full access to the festival for guests ages 12 and up, with no time limit on your stay once you’ve entered.
Kids Tickets are available for $22 during non-peak hours and $26 during peak hours, perfect for young explorers ages 4–12. Children ages 3 and under enter free, but must be accompanied by a paying adult.
For an elevated experience, the VIP Ticket is priced at $56 during non-peak hours and $58 during peak hours. VIP guests enjoy a dedicated check-in lane, a limited-edition Lumi Tote Bag, a Lumi Night Light, and 10% off purchases at the on-site Gift Shop.
Guests can choose from several timed entry sessions throughout the evening: 4:30–5:15 PM, 5:15–6:00 PM, 6:00–6:45 PM, 6:45–7:30 PM, 7:30–8:15 PM, and 8:15–9:00 PM. Once inside, you’re welcome to stay and explore until the festival closes.
