Boone Area Sports Commission

The BASC is a proud member of the Sports Events and Tourism Association, the premier trade association for the industry in the United States. The Boone and Watauga County Tourism Development Authorities provide a portion of the operational funding to the BASC along with industry contacts that have helped create awareness with event organizers across the State of North Carolina and the Southeast Region.

The BASC works with a variety of partners and all levels of the sport. Our staff connects organizers with event-hosting resources, including hotel and restaurant partners, area attractions, and other services provided by members of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce.

The BASC was formed after nearly 18-months of study by local stakeholders, seeking ways to further boost the local tourism economy. Don Schumacher, founder of DSA Sports, LLC, and past President of the National Association of Sports Commissions conducted a comprehensive feasibility study that included an inventory of local sports facilities and amenities and provided recommendations for growth opportunities in the sports tourism arena.

The promise of our cool springs, mild summers, colorful autumns, is the only coaxing you'll need to step outside yourself and go biking, hiking, fishing, zip-lining, kayaking, rafting, or tubing. Or maybe your idea of excitement is a leisurely stroll through a street festival or listening to live music on the front lawn of an historic house? We've got that too.

In addition to nationally known attractions like Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Tweetsie Railroad, Boone also has a vibrant art, history and cultural scene. Tour the historic frescoes that adorn area churches, visit the historic Jones House, or browse the specialty shops in downtown Boone. Spend enough time here and you might even spot a celebrity. Appalachian State University's Performing Arts Series and annual Appalachian Summer Festival bring some of the most well-known performers to the area all season long.

The adventure doesn't end when the colder weather begins. The Boone area boasts the most concentrated cluster of ski slopes in the entire region, including several black diamond slopes for the truly daring. For others, there is snowboarding, snow tubing, sledding, ice-skating, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Consider spending the holidays in our winter wonderland, or at least make a weekend out of a trip to one of our choose & cut Christmas tree farms. It's never too late to start a new family tradition!

The nearest airport to Boone-NC-USA is Tri-Cities Regional (TRI) Airport which is 45 miles away. Other nearby airports include Asheville (AVL) (72.9 miles), Charlotte (CLT) (80.5 miles), Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) (97.1 miles) and Greensboro/High Point (GSO) (97.8 miles).
