The Richmond Symphony performs, teaches, and champions music to inspire and unite our communities. Founded in 1957, the Richmond Symphony is the largest performing arts organization in Central Virginia. The organization includes an orchestra of more than 70 professional musicians, the 150-voice Richmond Symphony Chorus and more than 260 students in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra programs. Each season, more than 200,000 members of the community enjoy concerts, radio broadcasts, and educational outreach programs. The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University displays the art of our time and is free and open to the public six days a week. Artworks and exhibitions showcasing artists from around the world rotate through our four galleries and common spaces regularly, with related programming and events open to the public. Our building, the Markel Center, was designed by Steven Holl Architects specifically for the presentation of contemporary art and was completed in 2018.
