Friendly farm animals are the big draw at the Maymont Farm, a popular destination for families and animal lovers. The area offers hands-on animal encounters and insight into farm life where children and adults alike are delighted by the crow of a rooster, the feel of a sheep’s wool and the nudge of a hungry goat. Look for feed machines on-site to purchase treats for your furry pals.

North Bank Park is located at the south end of Texas Avenue, about five blocks east of the Hampton Street entrance to Maymont. The park is known to many as Texas Beach. A long, singletrack trail leads to many isolated sandy beaches and sunbathing rocks. The park is very popular with dog-walkers, but is also great for biking, hiking, and snorkeling.

Mount Calvary Cemetery was founded as a non-profit cemetery circa 1880 by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond to supplement grave spaces in the other Catholic Cemetery (Holy Cross) which was too small to accommodate the growing Catholic population in Richmond. The Diocese incorporated a Board of Trustees to manage the cemetery and, although many personnel changes have occurred, the Board still manages the cemetery today. Mount Calvary Cemetery welcomes members of all faiths and ethnic origins to fulfill their perpetual care needs in one of Richmond’s most hallowed grounds. Mount Calvary accommodates approximately 30,000 deceased loved ones from the Richmond community and beyond. The cemetery still operates as a private, non-profit organization. The cemetery owns approximately 90 acres of which 30 acres is set aside for future development which means we will be here to accommodate Richmond families for many decades to come.

Located in Byrd Park in downtown Richmond, Barker Field is the perfect place to bring your best friend for a day of fun and socializing with other dogs.

There are three entrances off of Riverside Drive for this section of the James River Park System. The 42nd Street entrance has parking for 30 cars. There is a trail along a river channel and river access over several small islands. The park system’s headquarters is located at the nearby Reedy Creek takeout with parking for 15-20 cars. The 22nd Street parking lot has spaces for about 45 cars. There is a mountain bike trail that links the main trail by the headquarters to the Buttermilk Trail on the hillside above.

The James River Park System is a 550+ acre oasis in the middle of the city, part of the city of Richmond's Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities. It is possible to hike or bike an 8 or more mile loop along the park's North Bank and Buttermilk trails using the Arthur Ashe Boulevard and Belle Isle Pedestrian bridges. Opportunities for recreational tree climbing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting and much more are available in the park. At the end of S. 12th St. downtown, a lovely getaway spot to see the Pipeline Rapids up close and, in season, catch Great Blue Herons nesting in their riverview rookery. There’s parking for only a few cars, but the overlooks are worthy and, if you don’t mind climbing down a metal ladder and walking on the pipeline, the walk is an unexpected treat in the middle of a city. Of course, pay attention to water levels for safety’s sake. Parking for 7 cars. The easternmost section of the James River Park, it’s a popular fishing spot with a concrete boat ramp and a parking lot that accommodates over 100 cars and trailers. It’s also the beginning of the Richmond Slave Trail. This section is located at the end of Brander St. Take the Maury St. exit off I-95 and turn right.

Riverview Cemetery (or River View) was initiated by the city of Richmond in 1887 with the purchase of fifty-three acres immediately west of Hollywood Cemetery on the James River.
