My wine career started at a hot dog stand. I worked the grill during the humid summers in Western New York rolling dogs over charcoal. I greeted customers as they arrived, shouting, “Whatcha want? Whatcha got?”— and the banter between the ‘grill man’ and customers began. I traded the grill in for fine dining when I moved to Salt Lake City. I loved the fast-paced environment on the floors of Utah’s top-rated restaurants, and made the decision to continue my training. I found I was especially motivated by the power of wine to enhance the dining experience for both the guests and myself. This passion has been greatly enhanced by my decision to become a certified Sommelier, and then an Educator with an internationally recognized program. I am pleased to take the enthusiasm that has its roots ‘behind the grill’ to the floor of bustling restaurants. As a Sommelier, I seek out epic experiences with food and wine for guests, and as the Founder and Educator of the Wine Academy of Utah, I introduce the intricacies of wine to enthusiasts and professionals alike in a fun environment. My banter of “How many dogs?” has transformed into “How about little ‘splishy splash’ to get you started tonight?”

Wine Academy of Utah

First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City, Utah, was organized in 1873. The present church structure, built in 1903, was restored in 2003. It is one of the three oldest religious structures in the city. This structure is notable for its red sandstone exterior and beautiful stained-glass windows.

HSL Restaurant, sister restaurant to Park City’s HANDLE and brought to Salt Lake by Executive Chef Briar Handly, Melissa Gray, and Meagan Nash, is a beauty of a spot that pushes all the right buttons. I had the chance to visit HSL for dinner last Saturday during their soft opening and was invited to a media event last night and the food, cocktails, and atmosphere haven’t strayed far from my mind since we first stepped through the door.

The bar program is being established by seasoned SLC cocktail expert, Scott Gardner. After following his moves around restaurants and bars in the city *[always a little too late]*, I finally got the chance to try his cocktails and they did not disappoint. No one is doing cocktails like Scott’s. The Bourbon + Black Tea + Clarified Milk, Mezcal + Epazote + Palm Sugar, Brandy + Pistachio + Mint cocktails were unbelievable. I could talk for days about his level of booze enthusiasm and geekery and I can’t wait to see what comes next out of HSL’s bar.

In a grassy plot near downtown Salt Lake City are the gravesites of Brigham Young and others, including Eliza R. Snow, pioneer poetess and early women's leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The centerpiece of this area is a monument honoring the 6,000 pioneers who lost their lives crossing the plains between 1847 and the advent of the railroad in 1869. This historic site is open daily to the public.
