Intro to Mending: Overview, Patches, & Hems

In this class, you’ll learn an overview of visible mending practices and explore practical skills to extend the life of your favorite clothing. Find ways to celebrate the age and quality of your wardrobe, learning creative upcycling options and keeping textiles out of the landfill. This hands-on session will include lessons on how to patch and embellish a hole in a favorite garment and turn it into a creative statement, while exploring strategic and aesthetic choices to highlight your Slow Wardrobe.

Rachael Lauritzen is a fiber artist, writer, community textile arts teacher, and an aspiring urban homesteader with a fondness for hiking, knitting, natural dyes, and craft chocolate. She taught practical arts at a local Waldorf charter school for 7 years and has successfully completed sheep shearing school. She has a Masters of Community and Organizational Leadership from Westminster University and is the director of High Desert Utah Fibershed, a Utah-based Fibershed Affiliate, which supports local regenerative textile economies.
