We’re a community of runners, hikers, bikers and ballplayers. We’re an outdoor playground, designed by Mother Nature, with class III and IV rapids running right through our downtown. A 52-mile bike trail runs along the James. The Richmond Marathon and Ukrop’s 10k are huge celebrations, and the whole region comes out to cheer on our local teams. In fact, we’re so sports-minded that the Washington Redskins have their training camp right in the center of the city. The Richmond Cross Country Invitational will be held within Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville on Friday, October 2, 2026, hosted by the University of Richmond and the Collegiate Running Association. This free-admission, family-friendly event welcomes the public to watch college cross country teams from across the country compete on the scenic Pole Green Park Cross Country Course, which features a flat grass-and-dirt surface. The morning begins with the Free Kids 400M Run (10 and under) at 8:30 a.m., National Anthem at 9:00 a.m., followed by the College Men’s 8K at 9:08 a.m. and the College Women’s 6K at 10:00 a.m.
