Wild Utah Fly Fishing

I-15 north to Ogden. East on 12th Street to the mouth of Ogden Canyon, SR-39. This byway can be divided into 3 distinct parts—Ogden Canyon, Pineview Reservoir, and the Monte Cristo Road. Once you enter the canyon the road quickly narrows and its cliff walls are steep, rugged, and wildly beautiful with layers of limestone and shale streaked with cream, pink, and red. Excellent fishing and hiking can be found in the canyon. Perched at the top of the canyon, 6 miles from the mouth, is scenic Pineview Reservoir and dam. Water recreation is popular year-round, with boat ramps, camping, and picnic facilities. A worthwhile stop for bird watchers is Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area’s North Arm Viewing Site, with a pedestrian nature trail. Past the reservoir the byway passes through the town of Huntsville on the way to a steep ascent through South Fork Canyon. The road follows the south fork of the Ogden River through heavily wooded landscapes. As the byway nears Monte Cristo summit, you can glimpse views of Monte Cristo Peak through stands of spruce and Douglas fir. Due to snow conditions, portions of this route are closed in winter.

Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and now based in Monterrey, Aguilar takes Mexican folklore, Brazilian bossa nova, ’60s folk, and ’90s rock and bends them into something that shouldn’t work together but absolutely does. His latest album, “Compita del Destino” (loosely: “Buddy of Destiny”), earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
