Market Street Oyster Bar - Cottonwood

Secluded in pine trees, The Hog Wallow Pub is located kitty-corner to the historic Old Mill ruin at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It is the latest reincarnation of the oldest and most notorious bar in the Cottonwood Heights area. Established in 1947 by a returning World War II veteran who converted an abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps bunkhouse into an out-of-the-way watering hole he named "The Branding Iron". Over the years the bar has changed names a number of times most notably, The Wagon Wheel, Demete's, The Fox and Bottle Inn and D. J.'s Beer Garden. In 1997 the bar was transformed by Keith Biesinger, into The Hog Wallow Pub. Since it's opening, Hog Wallow has received a number of awards including: City Search's "Best Outdoor Bar," City Weekly's "Best Neighborhood Bar" and "Best Escape From Downtown," and Salt Lake Magazine's "Best Suburban Bar." Most recently 2010 City Weekly proclaimed us the "Best bar to find your fathers name carved in the ceiling" and in 2011 we received Salt Lake Magazine's Best of the Beehive award for "Best Patio." Alpha Coffee Big Cottonwood Canyon

An intermediate out-and-back hike that follows a small canyon stream up to a waterfall. A fairly steep hike offering beautiful views and a quick way to be up and out of the city.

A moderately trafficked hike that will only take a couple hours but will put you deep into a small canyon on the Mt Olympus mountainside. Connects to a section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail that also crosses the Mt Olympus peak trail. Shady, cool trail that follows a stream for most of the way, and ends at a rock slide in view of a pretty waterfall.

**Local's recommendation:** Best times of year are spring through fall. Can be done in the winter with proper gear - Yaktrax or snowshoes, depending on the snow/ice.

**Highest point:** 6234 ft

**Lowest point:** 4859 ft

**Best time of year:** Summer and Fall, With proper gear Winter and Spring are also good.

**Safety information:** As with any trail in the foothills, watch for rattlesnakes, especially in summer months. Wear closed-toed shoes when hiking, be aware of your surroundings, and always look carefully before placing hands or feet. Be sure to bring plenty of water. This is a steep trail, so a walking pole can be helpful.

**Roadbook**

From the trailhead, follow the trail up the mountain. When you reach the turn off for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, stay on the Heughs Canyon Trail. When you come to the rock fall, you can get a good view of the waterfall and back down the canyon by scrambling to the middle of the rock area. It is also possible to scramble to the bottom of the rocks and walk up the stream to the base of the waterfall. There is a section of trail that continues at the top of the rock fall for those that have experience on that terrain.

**How to Get There**

**Public transport:** Bus routes do not travel up to this trailhead - best access is by car.

**Directions:** Drive south on Interstate 15 to exit 298 to merge onto Interstate 215 eastbound. Go 4.7 miles and take exit 6 for UT-190/6200 South eastbound. After less than a mile, turn left on Wasatch Boulevard. Heughs Canyon Trailhead parking is 0.5 mile past the turn on the right side of the street.

The Heughs Canyon Trailhead itself is not visibly marked and requires a short, steep walk through a neighborhood to a private lane. After parking, turn right on Canyon Cove Drive. Follow it a tenth of a mile to Oak Canyon Drive and turn left. Follow that for 400 feet and turn right on Canyon Winds Lane (formerly Berghalde Drive) and follow this one tenth of a mile to the end of the street. There is a private drive straight ahead, follow it to the trailhead.

**Parking:** The parking is free and on the street. The approximate location is just south of the intersection of Wasatch Boulevard and Canyon Cove Drive.

Heughs Canyon Trail

Wheeler Historic Farm is a unique site that was acquired by Salt Lake County in 1969 and is the only historic site operated by the County. The Junior League worked with the County to preserve the Farm for the centennial in 1976. The same year it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. County funds, grant monies and support from the Wheeler Farm Friends keeps the farm up and running. The site is about 75 acres in size and includes a swift moving stream (Walker Ditch-Little Cottonwood Creek) that feeds irrigation ditches on the property and supplies water to two ice ponds. Wheeler Historic Farm is a working farm and museum with a generous amount of open space, picnic facilities and a playground for public enjoyment. The Lawns/Pavilion, Activity Barn, Ice House and Party House are rented for private and public events providing a source of earned revenue. Wheeler Historic Farm operates wagon and cow train rides and the Rosebud Country Store in good weather May - October. www.wheelerfarm.com
