Secluded in pine trees, The Hog Wallow Pub is located kitty-corner to the historic Old Mill ruin at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It is the latest reincarnation of the oldest and most notorious bar in the Cottonwood Heights area. Established in 1947 by a returning World War II veteran who converted an abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps bunkhouse into an out-of-the-way watering hole he named "The Branding Iron". Over the years the bar has changed names a number of times most notably, The Wagon Wheel, Demete's, The Fox and Bottle Inn and D. J.'s Beer Garden. In 1997 the bar was transformed by Keith Biesinger, into The Hog Wallow Pub. Since it's opening, Hog Wallow has received a number of awards including: City Search's "Best Outdoor Bar," City Weekly's "Best Neighborhood Bar" and "Best Escape From Downtown," and Salt Lake Magazine's "Best Suburban Bar." Most recently 2010 City Weekly proclaimed us the "Best bar to find your fathers name carved in the ceiling" and in 2011 we received Salt Lake Magazine's Best of the Beehive award for "Best Patio." Parley's Historic Nature Park is an easy, family-friendly walk that is started as an off-leash dog park, but is also a beautiful walk with or without canine friends.

Unlike other dog parks that are often small fields or open areas fenced off and dedicated to letting dogs run around, Parley's Historic Nature Park (also referred to as Tanner Dog Park) is an 87-acre park that is also a wildlife refuge area containing numerous historic sites and plaques. It has multiple trails, and it joins with Parley's Trail for a much longer walking or hiking experience. It follows Parley's Creek and is full of trees and brush, and has beautiful views of the nearby mountains and the bottom of Parley's Canyon.

**Local's recommendation:** This is a popular area any time of year-bring your dog if you can, but if you can't or don't own a dog, you will meet many friendly pups on this walk.

Take Wasatch Boulevard to 3800 South. Follow 3800 South east into the canyon (fee area). Millcreek Canyon is full of hiking, mountain-biking, cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, and birdwatching opportunities.

#### Cross Country Skiing

The canyon road gate closes on November 1st. Once there is enough snow the road is groomed for skiing at least once a week. Fat bikes can ride the groomed trail but need to stay off the classic ski track.

Some of the birds you can see include, but aren't limited to, the Northern Pygmy-Owl, Northern Saw-Whet Owl, Flammulated Owl, and Great Horned Owl.
