I-15 north to Ogden. East on 12th Street to the mouth of Ogden Canyon, SR-39. This byway can be divided into 3 distinct parts—Ogden Canyon, Pineview Reservoir, and the Monte Cristo Road. Once you enter the canyon the road quickly narrows and its cliff walls are steep, rugged, and wildly beautiful with layers of limestone and shale streaked with cream, pink, and red. Excellent fishing and hiking can be found in the canyon. Perched at the top of the canyon, 6 miles from the mouth, is scenic Pineview Reservoir and dam. Water recreation is popular year-round, with boat ramps, camping, and picnic facilities. A worthwhile stop for bird watchers is Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area’s North Arm Viewing Site, with a pedestrian nature trail. Past the reservoir the byway passes through the town of Huntsville on the way to a steep ascent through South Fork Canyon. The road follows the south fork of the Ogden River through heavily wooded landscapes. As the byway nears Monte Cristo summit, you can glimpse views of Monte Cristo Peak through stands of spruce and Douglas fir. Due to snow conditions, portions of this route are closed in winter.

Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, is accessed via a 7.2-mile causeway. Its 28,022 acres are home to a unique variety of wildlife. Also featured are 25 miles of back country trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, a visitor center that's open year-round, and tours of the Fielding Garr Historic Ranch House. Facilities include RV and primitive camping, a beach picnic area, and marina. The causeway is 7 miles west of I-15 Exit #332 near Layton. Island Buffalo Grill provides food services at the Bridger Bay Beach indoor pavilion building. Open daily at 11 a.m., beginning March 9.

1.0 mi/1.6 km loop — From northbound I-15 take exit 332. Follow the frontage road to the intersection of Main and Gentile Street. Turn west on Gentile street, then south on 3200 West which turns into a dirt road. The visitors center is at the end of the dirt road.The hike follows the handicapped-accessible boardwalk at a 4,000-acre nature preserve. 34 interpretive exhibits along the boardwalk and a 30-foot viewing tower help visitors understand the unique ecosystem of the preserve and its importance along the north/south migration route. Visitors are asked to stay on the boardwalk to preserve the integrity of the wetlands for nesting and migrating birds.

Have you ever wondered what this landscape looked like in 1776? The Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation is working to restore the Wuda Ogwa (Bear River), returning to native plants to ancestral lands and returning water to Great Salt Lake. Learn more about these efforts and their significance at this talk by tribal elder Rios Pacheco and staff member Maria Moncur. This event accompanies "Voices & Votes: Democracy in America," a Smithsonian exhibition that explores the action, reaction, vision, and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape our country. "Voices & Votes: Democracy in America" is made possible in Utah by Utah Humanities and local venues around the state. Voices & Votes is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. It is based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress. Visit the exhibition in Ogden from October 24 to December 30, 2026 and learn how Utah connects to this national story through local companion exhibits and public programming.
