Out in Richmond: Queer Histories of the City

Join us for a talk on Richmond’s LGTBQ+ history with public historians Matthew Guillen and Anne McCrery. Learn about the early foundations of Richmond’s gay community in the 19th century, Richmond's literary renaissance in the 1920s which attracted queer authors from around the world, gay nightlife and the drag scene from the 1950s-1990s, and community building through activism, organizations, and newsletters in the late 20th century. This talk will highlight research methods and the archival resources you can access at museums and libraries across the city.

About Speakers:

Anne McCrery is a writer, public historian and Richmond resident since 2013. With her husband Matthew Guillen, she has given talks on Richmond’s LGBTQ+ history and is currently co-writing a biography of Chef Edna Lewis. She is also the Programs Specialist at the Library of Virginia and a Richmond Magazine contributor.

Matthew Guillen is a public historian, consultant, writer and a native Richmonder. He has given talks on LGBTQ+, food and Virginia history. Matthew is a Richmond Magazine contributor, and is currently co-authoring a biography of Virginia-born chef Edna Lewis with his partner Anne McCrery.
