Mount Olympus is a dominating presence on the Salt Lake City skyline and makes for one of the area's most rewarding hikes. Its craggy summit juts up nearly a mile above the valley floor below, beckoning hikers to try to gain it. The north side of the mountain is terrain full of cliffs and enormous slabs of broken quartzite, the domain of mountain goats and rock climbers. The west side, on the other hand, offers more modest grades and a trail that can take even mortals to the top of this impressive 9,026-foot peak. Capping off the route is several hundred feet of third-class scrambling over boulders and ledges, adding to the thrill and sense of accomplishment on reaching the top.

Mount Olympus Hike, Wasatch Front

An intermediate out-and-back hike that follows a small canyon stream up to a waterfall. A fairly steep hike offering beautiful views and a quick way to be up and out of the city.

A moderately trafficked hike that will only take a couple hours but will put you deep into a small canyon on the Mt Olympus mountainside. Connects to a section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail that also crosses the Mt Olympus peak trail. Shady, cool trail that follows a stream for most of the way, and ends at a rock slide in view of a pretty waterfall.

**Local's recommendation:** Best times of year are spring through fall. Can be done in the winter with proper gear - Yaktrax or snowshoes, depending on the snow/ice.

**Safety information:** As with any trail in the foothills, watch for rattlesnakes, especially in summer months. Wear closed-toed shoes when hiking, be aware of your surroundings, and always look carefully before placing hands or feet. Be sure to bring plenty of water. This is a steep trail, so a walking pole can be helpful.

**Roadbook**

From the trailhead, follow the trail up the mountain. When you reach the turn off for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, stay on the Heughs Canyon Trail. When you come to the rock fall, you can get a good view of the waterfall and back down the canyon by scrambling to the middle of the rock area. It is also possible to scramble to the bottom of the rocks and walk up the stream to the base of the waterfall. There is a section of trail that continues at the top of the rock fall for those that have experience on that terrain.

**How to Get There**

**Public transport:** Bus routes do not travel up to this trailhead - best access is by car.

**Directions:** Drive south on Interstate 15 to exit 298 to merge onto Interstate 215 eastbound. Go 4.7 miles and take exit 6 for UT-190/6200 South eastbound. After less than a mile, turn left on Wasatch Boulevard. Heughs Canyon Trailhead parking is 0.5 mile past the turn on the right side of the street.

The Heughs Canyon Trailhead itself is not visibly marked and requires a short, steep walk through a neighborhood to a private lane. After parking, turn right on Canyon Cove Drive. Follow it a tenth of a mile to Oak Canyon Drive and turn left. Follow that for 400 feet and turn right on Canyon Winds Lane (formerly Berghalde Drive) and follow this one tenth of a mile to the end of the street. There is a private drive straight ahead, follow it to the trailhead.

**Parking:** The parking is free and on the street. The approximate location is just south of the intersection of Wasatch Boulevard and Canyon Cove Drive.

Heughs Canyon Trail

From exit 295 on I-15 go east about 5 miles to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Continue east up the canyon 4.5 miles. Park in the Tanner’s Flat campground parking lot south of the road.Birds you can see—Black-chinned, Calliope, and Rufous Hummingbirds; Hammond’s and Dusky Flycatchers; Clark’s Nutcracker; Stellar’s Jay; Swainson’s Thrush; Tree, Violet-green, and Cliff Swallows; Pine Grosbeak; Red Crossbill; Cassin’s Finch; Black Rosy-finch.

Little Cottonwood Canyon

The Living Room trail is a must-do hike located right in the heart of downtown with a beautiful overlook of Salt Lake City.

This popular, well-trafficked hike is perfect for anyone looking to get outdoors but that still wants to remain close to the city. Its infamous name comes from the red rock "couches" & "chairs" that can be found at the end of the hike, where you can sit and enjoy a snack or beverage while overlooking the city. Located in the foothills of Salt Lake, right above The Natural History Museum of Utah, The Living Room Hike is a must-try hike for anyone visiting! It is an out-and-back trail that will take you approximately 1.5-3 hours hiking time, and is doable for any level hiker.

**Author’s recommendation**  
If you're feeling adventurous, bring a headlight and head up to watch sunset from the best living room in town!

**Tips and suggestions**  
It can be incredibly hot in the summer months to hike this trail as there is direct sunlight and no cool canyon air. Be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and other wildlife, and always keep your distance from the animals. Ideal times to hike are spring or fall. If you enjoy winter hiking, it is a great trail to experience (you may even get lucky and see moose during less crowded winter months)

The Living Room Hike

An incredible, moderately steep hike to the top of a beautiful peak overlooking the Salt Lake valley.

The first half of the upwards trail follows the same route as the Living Room Hike, and then branches off to higher elevations. It is a well-trafficked cardio workout with a good mix of shaded areas and exposed mountainside trail with amazing views. A moderately difficult trail, it has a relatively short distance to a great payoff at the top. Also known as the Big Beacon Mount Wire Trail, the top has an old airway beacon that affords another 25 feet of elevation.

**Local's recommendation:** An excellent spring, summer, or fall hike. Can be hiked in the winter with proper weather gear.

**Roadbook**

Start at the Living Room Trailhead, which can be accessed from multiple places along Colorow Road. Park at the southmost end of the street where you'll see a sign that reads "trail entrance" covered in a bunch of stickers. There are several trails you can take that will lead you to the same spot. Eventually you'll see a big "174" yellow sign, turn left there. From there, keep heading straight, uphill, and stay to the right. Toward the end of the trail, you will come to a small, unsigned trail split - stay right to reach Mount Wire (left will take you to the Living Room).

Secluded in pine trees, The Hog Wallow Pub is located kitty-corner to the historic Old Mill ruin at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It is the latest reincarnation of the oldest and most notorious bar in the Cottonwood Heights area. Established in 1947 by a returning World War II veteran who converted an abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps bunkhouse into an out-of-the-way watering hole he named "The Branding Iron". Over the years the bar has changed names a number of times most notably, The Wagon Wheel, Demete's, The Fox and Bottle Inn and D. J.'s Beer Garden. In 1997 the bar was transformed by Keith Biesinger, into The Hog Wallow Pub.
