Mitchell High School

The new high school in Mitchell is a modern, large-scale facility located at 821 North Capital Street. It sits alongside and integrates directly with the district’s Career & Technical Education Academy and Performing Arts Center, creating a unified space for academics, technical training, athletics, and community events. At over 200,000 square feet and built to serve around 800 students, the school reflects a shift toward a more college-like environment with open layouts, natural gathering areas, and flexible spaces.

Inside, the building features updated classrooms, science labs, and dedicated art and pottery studios, along with a two-story library that serves as a central academic hub. A large commons area connects much of the building and includes a 400-seat cafeteria and a smaller café-style space, both of which can be used for dining or events. The entire facility is fully air-conditioned and designed with wider hallways and improved flow to comfortably handle large numbers of students and visitors.

Athletics and events are a major focus of the design. The school includes three gymnasiums, highlighted by a main competition gym that seats around 2,000 people and can host major sporting events, tournaments, and school gatherings. Connected to the building is the Performing Arts Center, which features a roughly 1,200-seat auditorium, a black box theater, and music rehearsal spaces. Together, these facilities allow the campus to host concerts, theater productions, competitions, and large community events.

Overall, the new Mitchell High School is more than just a school building—it functions as a community hub. With its combination of academic spaces, large event venues, and flexible gathering areas, it is designed to serve both students and the broader Mitchell community for everything from daily learning to regional events and performances.
