Norris Field, located at 5602 Cottonworth Ave., will now be known as Coppermine Norris Field. Coppermine announced the sale in a newsletter sent out to club members Wednesday afternoon. A purchase price was not given.
"Coppermine is excited to own a piece of history and return the club house and field to its glory by creating a fun atmosphere that includes music, food, and sports in a festival type environment," the newsletter states.
This is just the latest effort by Coppermine to expand its reach in the city. In October, the company purchased Bare Hills Athletic Club at 1420 Clarkview Road off Falls Road, and in 2015, took over control of the Cross Keys Tennis Club, investing $500,000 in renovations to that facility.
Representatives from Coppermine could not be reached for comment.
Coppermine said in the newsletter it will invest $1.5 million to replace the large grass fields into turf, and will play host to local soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, football, softball and baseball games.
For 18 years, Bryn Mawr's athletic programs have used the field to practice and host home games. Under the agreement with Coppermine, the private all-girls school will continue to be able to use the facilities on weekdays throughout the school year.
Coppermine will start renovating the field and clubhouse in November, with plans to complete the project by March 2018. Bryn Mawr Headmistress Maureen E. Walsh said in a letter to the school's community that it does not anticipate any of the school's programs will be impacted by the renovations.
