Berston Field House

Berston Field House was built in 1923 and is located just north of downtown Flint. Berston is utilized for a variety of sports activities (boxing, softball, basketball, and handball), dance, and the arts. Many athletic greats honed their skills in Berston Field House and continue to consider it to have been an important stepping stone in reaching their professional status. These athletic greats include: Justin Thigpin Sr. who played for the Detroit Pistons; Basketball greats - Charlie Bell, Morris Peterson and Mateen Cleaves (known as the Flintstones) made it possible for Michigan State University to win the Division 1 NCAA championship in 2000; and, most recently, Claressa Shields has won the Olympic Championship in the newly created women’s boxing division for the second time, and has successfully won all her fights since she became a professional fighter. Friends of Berston was established as an independent nonprofit entity in 2014 in order to build on the storied history of Berston Field House, and to create an opportunity for expanded community activity and service.
