Michigan Tech has 11 FIS Homologated Trails
Michigan Tech Trails is a world class ski trail system with 21 miles of groomed ski trails for classic and skate skiing. With trails ranging from beginner to expert, including 2.5 miles of lighted trails for night skiing, Tech Trails offers terrain for skiers of all levels. Trails are groomed daily to manage the 200 inches of average annual snowfall every winter. A heated wax building, located at the main trailhead off Sharon Ave, provides changing rooms, lockers, lounge area, and wax table for trail users 24 hours a day. A heated chalet is also available at the Nara trailhead with full bathrooms, showers, fireplace, and picnic tables, open daily from 8am-8pm. There are 5 smaller trailheads located at the Michigan Tech SDC, Michigan Tech Ball Fields, Houghton High School, Pilgrim Road (Tolkien Trails), and Mill Road. For pet owners, dogs are permitted on Isle Royale Loop, Superior Loop, Husky Trail, and the Tolkien Trails with access from the Michigan Tech Ball Fields, Pilgrim Road, and Houghton High School trailheads. Dogs are allowed on Overlook Loop and River Trail from the Nara Trailhead. The trails are also open for snowshoeing and fat-tire biking during the winter. Tech trails is also open for Snowshoes and Fatbikes during the winter. Snowshoes and Fatbikes (3.5”+ tires) are allowed on all of the Dog trails, ungroomed singletrack bike trails, and easy green trails (Birch, Oak, Pine, Core, Superior, Nara, and Royalewood). After dark, and before grooming for the next day, fat-tire bikes are allowed on all groomed ski trails
Getting there: Located on the south side of Houghton from US 41, turn at the light on MacInnes Drive. Follow MacInnes Drive to Sharon Avenue and the Student Development Complex (SDC). Take Sharon avenue past the SDC to the access road for IMR storage. Turn left to park.
