The park currently hosts several baseball fields, a tennis court, playground equipment, and a shelter house. A Board of Directors manages the park completely independent of the church. Funds donated to the park help with upkeep and projects to be enjoyed by residents of Catawba Island.
The park originated as part of 18 acres of Catawba Island that was set aside as property for a Lutheran church. In 1966 the American Lutheran Church announced the plans for a Mission’s Church on North East Catawba Road. Resurrection Lutheran Church was built on 6 acres closest to the road. The remaining 12 acres was set aside to be sold.
Dr. John E. Braun became interested in turning the land into a recreational park for area residents and churches. Dr. Braun spent much time and effort encouraging individuals and organizations to help with this effort. Unfortunately, he passed away before this was accomplished.
Shortly before the one-year option allowed by the Church Mission, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Titsworth purchased the land and gifted the 12 acres to the church, creating what is now known as John E. Braun Memorial Park. The park was officially dedicated on September 27, 1970.
