The Works includes the Aquarena, Field House and other recreation facilities on Memorial University's St. John's Campus. The Works offer a variety of fitness, aquatic and recreation facilities and programs to the general public and the university community.
The Works employs more the 200 highly trained professionals with diverse backgrounds in the areas of aquatics, fitness, maintenance, customer service, food services, and management.
Built for the 1977 Canada Summer Games, the Aquarena Fitness Centre is located on the campus of Memorial University and is managed by The Works. The Aquarena provides facilities related to fitness, aquatic, and recreation for all age groups. It offers programs such as: Recreational Swimming, Adult Lane Swim, Masters Swimming, Tiny Tot Program, Children’s Lessons, Adult Lessons, Private Lessons, Lifeguarding, Aquatic Sport Clubs.
Facilities available at the Aquarena include a 65 meter, 8 lane swimming pool; 2 water slides (205 ft twister slide and 90ft tube slide); Tarzan Rope; Diving boards and Towers; 2 Kiddie Slides; Large public change rooms, showers, and saunas; Special needs change room and shower; and Coin operated lockers.
The Aquarena has a wide variety of strength training and toning equipment to suit your needs. The equipment is very user friendly and is great for novice and advanced users. There is a great selection of cardio equipment such as treadmills, arc trainers, ellipticals, spin bikes and rowers, in addition to a large selection of free weights and an abdominal stretching area with mats, exercise balls for core strengthening, jump ropes, ab rollers and more. The Aquarena is also home to two international sized squash courts which are located on the upper level of the building.
Upgrades for the Canada Summer Games 2025: New pool bulkheads, pool lines, extended 10m platform (to accommodate adding a 3m platform), new 1m and 3m springboards, new media centre/clock, new fixed bleacher seating (with added temporary seating), equipment for warm-up area, enhanced lighting, removal of inner office spaces to open up poolside and seating area, and added 2-story building extension to provide added office/storage space and upper seating accessibility via elevator with accessible washrooms, wash/change room upgrades, and general facility updates.
