Located 55 kilometres outside of Fort McMurray, the Fort McKay Arena is the community’s home for broomball, curling, figure skating, hockey, and ringette during the winter months. From May to September, the ice is removed and the arena serves as a venue for other sports and community events. Outside the arena, there is a recreational softball/slowpitch field.

Wood Buffalo ranks by area, as one of the largest municipalities in North America encompassing 68,454 square kilometers.

The municipality was established in April 1995 through the amalgamation of the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District No. 143.
