And for the pros, almost pros, not even close to pros and people who just like to cheer, the countless sporting events that take place here every year are a special treat. They’re a chance for everyone to enjoy, if even for a weekend, the special place we get to take in all year.

Plus with 4 seasons, Maine can host 4 times the types of events. Skiing to sailing, running to rafting, we can be the backdrop for it all. The Cross for LifeFlight is our most important fundraising event of the year, and is one of the easiest ways to support our lifesaving mission. The annual event, which takes place during the entire month of August, is a self directed outdoor challenge for individuals and teams and relies on fundraising and sponsors to raise critically needed funds for LifeFlight of Maine. The Cross for LifeFlight is open to everyone and every activity: hiking, cycling, swimming, kayaking, running, and sailing! Participants have the flexibility to choose their favorite solo or team activity, and complete their Crossing, however, whenever, and wherever they choose throughout the month!

Northern Maine Community Trails proudly hosts the Nordic Trail Festival, a celebration of community, trails and lifestyle.

Whether you want to tackle the trails for a day of hiking, running or biking, or relax and take part in a variety of events, this weekend should not be missed. Enjoy live music, games, racing, and the awesome trails!

## Family-Fun 5K

**NEW THIS YEAR!**

Join us for the **2026 Cross for LifeFlight Family-Fun 5K** on Saturday, August 15, at Portland’s Back Cove Trail. 

LifeFlight of Maine is bringing supporters together in person for the 5k, which welcomes all ages and abilities. Participants are invited to walk, run, or jog alongside LifeFlight crew members, former patients, and other fellow supporters – all while raising critical funds to support LifeFlight’s lifesaving mission. 

While the month-long challenge remains a core part of the event, this year’s addition of the 5k creates a new opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate, and elevate fundraising efforts in a memorable way. 

Participants can choose to take part in the 5K, the month-long Cross challenge, or both. 

This event is open to all Cross for LifeFlight participants, who are welcome to bring their families and up to two additional guests. Please let us know when you register for this year's Cross if you plan to take part in the 5K, and if you will be bringing additional guests.

Cross for LifeFlight Family Fun 5K

The Portland Sea Dogs, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will host Women in Sports Night on Friday, August 21 at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field.

The night will begin with a pregame women in sports panel on the field behind home plate from 4:45 pm to 5:15 pm. The panel will include Sea Dogs Director of Broadcasting Emma Tiedemann; Lani Silversides, the Founder of Strong Girls United and a former Division I athlete; Jennifer Kessy, an Olympic Medalist in volleyball; and Maddie Chaput, a track & field star at the University of Maine.

The first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive an [Emma Tiedemann talking bobblehead](https://www.mlb.com/milb/news/portland-emma-tiedemann-talking-bobblehead?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage), courtesy of Planet Fitness. Tiedemann became the Sea Dogs broadcaster in 2020 and is currently just one of two female broadcasters in Minor League Baseball, joining former Sea Dogs assistant broadcaster Rylee Pay, who is currently the voice of the Tacoma Rainiers, the affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

The Firebird Trail Races are challenging and wicked fun with distance options of 13 miles, 26.2 miles, and 50K on trails in Lowell Preserve and through North Falmouth Community Forest. Produced by The Grind Run Company, this event raises funds for several local nonprofits.

The second annual Bangor Region YMCA Breakaway Swim, and the first to be held at the beautiful Camp Jordan, will take place on August 22, 2026.  The Breakaway Swim aims to provide both first-time open-water swimmers and seasoned competitors an invigorating challenge.  Participants can choose between the fast-paced, 500-meter race, or the 1-mile test of endurance.  Both races offer an incredible experience – bringing together friendly competition, supportive energy, and the natural beauty of pristine Branch Lake.  Both races will begin on shore, as a mass start, with competitors swimming around designated buoys.  Both races will also finish on shore, with the order of finish determining male and female winners for each age group.  We hope that many will join us to make a splash at this summer’s Breakaway Swim at Camp Jordan.

5 races, a farmer’s market, dj and so much fun. Come early to cheer on elite runners in a blazing fast mile on the horse track, enjoy a spirited kids run, check out the farmer’s market. This is so much more than just a race. You are welcome to come walk the 5K, cheer on runners and find delicious locally sourced treats. And if you are excited to lace up your sneakers, this is a unique opportunity to compete.

Townshend Hockey is a skating and skills program for all ages and all levels of hockey players serious about taking their game to the next level. Townshend Hockey is owned and operated by Graeme Townshend, who has played and coached at every level, including the NHL.
