The George Gervin GameAbove Center: A Premier Stage for Competition in Ann Arbor

In the heart of Ypsilanti, the George Gervin GameAbove Center stands as one of Southeast Michigan’s premier sports venues, blending state-of-the-art amenities with a welcoming atmosphere for athletes and fans alike. Home to Eastern Michigan University’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Women’s Volleyball programs, the 204,000-square-foot arena has become a go-to stage for regional and national events like the NAIA Cheer and Dance National Championships.

“The George Gervin GameAbove Center has everything event organizers are looking for—versatility, accessibility, and a first-class guest experience,” said Meaghan Hughes, Director of the Ann Arbor Sports Commission.

A Versatile Venue for Every Event

With seating for over 8,500 spectators and an expansive 20,000-square-foot arena floor, the George Gervin Center is designed to host more than just EMU athletics. From basketball and volleyball to cheer, dance, and gymnastics, the venue’s adaptability is one of its greatest strengths.

The auxiliary gym enhances this flexibility, providing additional warm-up and practice space, overflow capacity, and support for staggered game schedules. “That added space makes a huge difference in the flow of tournaments and large-scale events,” Hughes explained.

Event organizers also benefit from a suite of premium amenities. The private suites and the Eagles Nest lounge offer elevated hospitality and VIP experiences, while ample on-site parking ensures smooth arrival and departure for large crowds. “These features not only enhance the athlete and fan experience but also create opportunities for sponsors, revenue generation, and relationship-building,” Hughes noted.

Driving Regional Impact

Beyond the walls of the arena, the George Gervin Center plays a significant role in supporting sports tourism in Washtenaw County. Hosting major events brings in visiting teams, families, and fans who drive business to local hotels, restaurants, and shops.

“Every event we host here boosts the local economy and puts Ypsilanti on the map as a hub for regional and national competition,” Hughes shared. “It also fosters community pride and connection, which is just as valuable as the economic impact.”

Hosting Championships with Excellence

The Ann Arbor Sports Commission has proudly brought the NAIA Cheer and Dance National Championships to the George Gervin Center for four consecutive years (2021–2025). The arena’s excellent sightlines, ample seating, and dedicated spaces for staging, warm-ups, and awards have made it an ideal home for the event.

“The staff at the George Gervin Center are incredibly professional and supportive,” Hughes emphasized. “Their commitment to detail ensures every event runs smoothly, and that creates a high-energy, welcoming atmosphere for participants and fans.”

One standout moment came during the Champions of Character Event, where NAIA athletes partnered with Special Olympics athletes to learn a cheer and a dance together. “It was such a powerful reminder of the inclusive spirit of sports and the positive impact these events can have,” Hughes reflected.

Looking Ahead

With the NCAA bid cycle approaching, the Ann Arbor Sports Commission and EMU are already exploring opportunities to bring additional championship events to the George Gervin GameAbove Center.

“The future is bright,” Hughes said. “This venue has all the tools to continue attracting marquee events that elevate our region on the national stage.”
