Get to Know Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve Prior to colonization, the land now known as Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Preserve was covered by oak-hickory forest and swamp. When Mabel (Lewis) and Lloyd Johnson purchased the land in 1940, a portion was cultivated as farmland. In 2007, their foundation–the Lloyd and Mabel Johnson Foundation–donated the land to Legacy Land Conservancy.

The 51 acres donated to Legacy included farmland, oak-hickory forest, and buttonbush swamp. In 2016, 15 of the 18 acres of farmland were converted into a restored prairie community. The remaining three acres were devoted to on-going projects managed through two community partnerships: one with Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and another with Project Grow.

Today, the buttonbush swamp remains nestled within the mature oak-hickory forest, the wetlands are an amphibian hotspot, and a diverse population of native grasses and wildflowers abound in the restored prairie. The Preserve adjoins Pittsfield Charter Township’s Lillie Park to the north, with an interconnected trail system for easy access to both areas.

**Parking –** Parking is available in a small parking lot near the cell phone tower.

​Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area is a 25 acre park adjacent to Scarlett and Mitchell Schools and Mitchell-Scarlett Woods. Access to the park is from the schools’ parking lot, where parking is available. A trail through Mitchell-Scarlett woods connects to the city park.

This park is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. The area contains an old field, a diverse wetland, and a wooded area. The old field and wetlands are great areas to look for birds, facilitated by many bird boxes throughout the park.

Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area

The Cherry Hill Nature Preserve is 160 acres of diverse terrain, including rolling hills, wetlands, part of Fleming Creek, meadow and woods. The preserve is approximately one half mile square.

The land is owned by Superior Township and open to the public. Some walking paths have been created (look for a trail map in the map box at the main entrance).

The wildlife population here is as diverse as the terrain, with a resident owl population, as well as many wetland bird species, including warblers, and bluebirds.

Cherry Hill Nature Preserve

Tefft Park is 40 acres iwth four softball fields, play structures, an open field for playing soccer, football, and ultimate Frisbee. two sand volleyball courts, disc golfing course, and pavilion. This park is home to the Saline Recreation Center.

Just as the sun sets on Hudson Mills Metropark, we will start with an indoor presentation about owls in Michigan, adaptations, and how to identify owls. After, we will head out on the trail to search for Michigan native owls. We will discover the amazing characteristics of owls and how to identify the physical and vocal characteristics of the owl species in Southeastern Michigan.  
  
What to Expect:  
This owl hike is family friendly for children aged 8 and up with their parents. This program starts indoors and ends outside. The remainder of the 1.5-hour program time will be spent walking on the nature trails. The time outside will be spent on a leisurely walk with frequent stops. Expect to walk less than 1 mile. The planned path surface is dirt, gravel, and grass with frequently rolling and slightly hilly grade that is not suitable for adaptive walking equipment. No prior experience is necessary. Time includes small group instruction. For maximum enjoyment, some of our 1.5-hour program time will require all participants to patiently remain quiet and listen closely.
