The Blacksmith Shop was built in 1877 by a group of stone masons in just eight days. The shop was owned and operated at that time by William F. Neebling, who sold it to Theodore Morschheuser in 1909. John Schneider became an apprentice to Morschheuser in 1911, and in 1922, Mr. Schneider continued the practice of making and repairing wagons, wheels, and related items made from hammered steel. He also shoed horses to supplement his income. John Schneider owned the Blacksmith Shop until his death in 1952. The Blacksmith Shop, one of Michigan's last intact Main Street blacksmith shops, was purchased by the Manchester Area Historical Society in 1982. The Blacksmith Shop is the meeting place and training center for several who still practice the blacksmith craft. Demonstrations are often presented during local festivals. The blacksmiths welcome your questions and enjoy explaining how the forge operates.

Remnants of Manchester's glory days are still discernable in its well-preserved streetscape and elegant private homes. The River Raisin (named after the wild grapes that grew along its banks), spawned three dams that powered mills and factories. Trains came in every half hour from one of the two railroad lines passing through Manchester. As new forms of production and transportation replaced river and rail travel during the 20th century, Manchester's glory days ended, but it has continued as an agricultural and industrial center with a strong sense of history.

Manchester Historical Walking Tour

The Manchester Tour de Barn Quilts is the first of a group of eco-tourism activities being planned featuring the Village of Manchester and surrounding natural areas. This self-guided bike tour is on rural roads beginning and ending in the parking lot at Manchester High School.

The tour travels bucolic byways to look at barn quilts, which are large, colorful quilt blocks on the sides of barns, as well as other historic barns and churches, a farm stand, a Ford mill, and the charming Village of Manchester. The route is 14 to 26 miles long. Included too is an optional 6 mile loop.

Manchester Tour de Barn Quilts

Chi-Bro Park, named after Manchester's popular annual Chicken Broil, has a 3.5 acre spring-fed pond, small dam, grassy area, woodlot, nature trail, swing sets, two grills, benches and six picnic tables, timber-frame pavilion, wood play structure, flag pole and light, split rail fence, two sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, 9-hole disc golf course and outdoor ice rinks.

A designated cross-country track extends through the park into adjacent property and is also used by the high school teams.

Flat Water is a Big Bear Tournaments ice hockey tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan, running October 2–4, 2026. Sanctioned by USA Hockey, the event welcomes 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U teams at B, A and AA levels. Each team is guaranteed four games, with the final game serving as a championship or consolation contest, and game periods vary by age division.

The 9th Annual 5K Domestic Violence Awareness Run/Walk is an in-person community event at Frog Island Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Supporting local mental health charities, participants run through the vibrant streets of downtown Ann Arbor, then wind their way through the panoramic University of Michigan campus. The marathon, half-marathon, and 10K courses also encompass stretches along the Huron River and Gallup Park and through Nichols Arboretum before returning to campus and downtown.

Held October 15 at Crisler Center, the event features networking with current and former student-athletes and coaches beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel at 6 p.m. with Michigan alumnae and prominent sports-industry leaders including Andrea Joyce, Kate Johnson, Estee Portnoy, Casey E. Taylor and Li Li Leung. The summit offers storytelling, professional development, networking and mentorship.
