Join us in welcoming writer Jaswinder Bolina for a reading and Q&A as part of the Zell Visiting Writers Series, presented by the Helen Zell Writers’ Program in partnership with UMMA, with support from the Department of English Language & Literature.

Jaswinder Bolina is an American poet and essayist whose work frequently explores the intersections of language, race, and the South Asian immigrant experience. His most recent collection, *English as a Second Language and Other Poems* (2023), which was awarded the 2025 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award from Claremont Graduate University, continues his deep dive into cultural identity. Beyond poetry, Bolina gained significant recognition for his 2020 essay collection, *Of Color*, which provides a poignant examination.

Zell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA’s Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come, first served basis; please arrive early to secure a spot.

The 9th Annual 5K Domestic Violence Awareness Run/Walk is an in-person community event at Frog Island Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Held October 15 at Crisler Center, the event features networking with current and former student-athletes and coaches beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel at 6 p.m. with Michigan alumnae and prominent sports-industry leaders including Andrea Joyce, Kate Johnson, Estee Portnoy, Casey E. Taylor and Li Li Leung. The summit offers storytelling, professional development, networking and mentorship.
