Bird Hills Nature Area is the largest natural area in the city at 146 acres. Its hilly woods are a sanctuary for hikers. The area is closed to bicycles to prevent damage from erosion.

There are five trailheads: at Down Up Circle, at Bird Rd, at Beechwood Dr, and two near the Newport Rd parking area.

No facilities are available in this undeveloped park. The unpaved trails wind through hills and ravines covered with beech, sugar maple, flowering dogwood, oaks and hickory and various spring wildflowers.

Join for a chance to learn and practice mindfulness meditation.  
  
The class will emphasize bringing our attention to the present moment through guided and silent meditations. It supports us in being more present in our lives which has many benefits–we are able to live with more intention and in accord with our physical and emotional health. Each class will have a period of meditation with time for questions. This class is available for those who have meditated before and for pure beginners. Flexible attendance—join for just one class, a select few, or the full four-part series.  
  
Class will meet for 4 Fridays in October, Oct 2, 9, 16 and 23 from noon to 1pm.  
  
About the instructor: Lou Weir, a graduate of Pioneer High and University of Michigan is a retired lawyer, having practiced in Ann Arbor/Brighton for over 30 years. He has been teaching insight meditation for over 20 years. He is a founding teacher of Insight Meditation Ann Arbor and is also a certified teacher of the Diamond Approach Path.
