How Auburn-Opelika Became Home Base for USA Wheelchair Handball

Long before wheelchair handball had a national team, Auburn-Opelika was helping write the story of handball competition in the United States. In 2013, USA Team Handball established a residency program in the area, creating a hub for elite training and competition through Auburn University.

A Sportcation combines competition with experience. It is the idea that a tournament can also feel like a getaway, offering athletes and families something meaningful beyond game time.

“Passive Tourism” and Healthy Communities

Auburn‑Opelika’s disc golf courses do far more than host tournaments. In August alone, players logged 458 rounds and 681 hours across Tumble Tree DGC, The Rock at Spring Villa, and The Graveyard at Spring Villa, which equals about 1,974,260 steps and 1,504 km or 935 miles of walking, a clear signal of healthier daily activity and time spent together on the course.

Rumble on the Rails – Opelika, Alabama Hosts 130 Team Soccer Tournament

This past weekend, Auburn-Opelika Tourism hosted Rumble on the Rails, a soccer tournament that brought 130 teams and 1,700 players, coaches, and spectators to the area. The event utilized six venues: Wire Road Soccer Complex, Opelika Sportsplex, Floral Park, West Ridge Baseball Complex, and Moore Stadium.
